NY chicken lover!!!!

Well heated dog bowls is a bust had to move water and food back inside the coop. This spring I'm going to build a shallow 3 sided box just enough to fit the food and water in. I was wondering why chickens wasn't out eating and drinking all day and turns out the FF and water was frozen on top. Had enough cold wind to out do the dog bowls. Once I broke the ice and mixed the FF it was game on. I had to kick one ee out of water because she was standing in it like a hot tub. Well now to go work on frozen pipes and busted pipes.
My heated bowls are in a plastic dog crate I picked up at an estate sale. Had no idea what I needed it for at the time but it sure did come in handy. I have a blue tarp over it to keep the winds & snow out. The water gets frozen around the rim of the bowl but the water is lower than that so the girls can still drink. I put a glass cup inside the water bowl so they don't walk in the water. But I keep catching Lucy standing in the feed bowl. I have it up on a block so they would not walk in it. But she didn't get the memo. Guess I need to put a glass or bowl inside that heated dog bowl as well.

Good luck on the frozen pipes. -10 here with the windchill & it doesn't look like its going to warm up anytime soon.

Yeah they stand in the food also. I cant wait for summer. I think the cover for feed and water will be like half an A frame so they cant stand in food and water just shove the bowls into crack of wall and floor.

Well i fixed one burst pipe have two frozen but they are just washer hook ups. Also still have furnace frozen somewhere. I moved my space heater from basement to crawl space hope that helps. Going to buy a new space heater or two tonight after work. Hope pipes unthaw by tomorrow i bought the foam wrap for them but dont want to use untill i know no more busted lines.

Good morning. I have one chicken who decided this winter she would skip all the hassle of finding your spot to roost for the night and would like a private room. I disagreed with her, and tossed her up on the roost when I closed up, but she persisted. She won, she sleeps in one of the nest boxes, and she does not poop in there, which was my real concern. Of course it is Stewie, my rebel girl, always doing thing differently.

You want my light sussex? She can room with your lonely girl. Only problem is stupid poos where she sleeps. The one chicken i have that i hate. But shes laying so cant off her yet. Tired of cleaning frozen poo out of boxes though. We use to call her big mama but i renamed het to stupid. I know not nice but this bird is just a ding bat i think too much in breeding cause she also has some minor toe/leg/balance issues. At least shes out from under the roosts like she use to do. Now only her filth noth others lol.

Stewie is not lonely, she just "vants to be alone a". She is an individual, a deep thinker. She is one of the original 6, and drove the others nuts doing things her way. Then they would all try it her way, and that would be the new right way. They never gave her credit, though. So even though she has had three summers, she still has it. No thanks for the Sussex. No integrating in the winter, too stressful FOR ME. The cold is enough.

Are Sumatra eggs small like bantam eggs are? I remember someone mentioning they are small bird. Would one have the same troubles with their eggs being shipped as they would have with bantam eggs? When my Silkie eggs shipped all the air cells had detached and out of the 10-11 eggs I had let sit for a day, 9 reattached.

If you are coming to the picnic, I can meet Stony someplace and bring you eggs. He isn't that far from me.

Lol i had to try. If i ever remember i'll get a video of het trying to get out the main door that is only like 1ft high. Takes her like 5 min to work up the nerve to do it. She waljs up to it looks backs up foes back up looks aroynd alot and then she might jump down. But you would think she was falling ten feet cause she tries to flap once or twice in that hop.

I think she has vision troubles she is always last for scratch or grapes . Only one behind her on getting grapes is my roo but he calls the ladies and lets them take it feom him or out from under him. Shes nice i poke her and tap the nest box and she never bites me as i grab her on her way out. I place her on roosts and she looks lost or like she has vergo.

Dishwasher is thawed out. Phew. I thought I was going to have to take them all out and wash them by hand. But I didn't give up hope on it thawing out...I kept adding dishes as recently as breakfast this morning. (I HATE to wash dishes. I actually didn't buy a house because it didn't have a dishwasher. It was cute and clean, but no dishwasher? No sale)

I got 3 eggs yesterday and 6 today. Of course several were frozen. But what can one expect with the temps so darn low? Then I fed them half a loaf of bread for dinner. Means I won't have eggs for a few days. (Who wants to go out in this cold to collect them anyway?)

I am sick of winter. Totally sick of it. I move from house to house to assist my clients, so I am in and out of this cold all day long. Even my car hates this cold. It hasn't gotten warm enough to go to electric power in days. Someone posted a picture of a snowman, laying on his back on the deck, with 4 knives sticking out of him. Caption? "Die, Winter, Die"....made my day.
