Still no pips in my eggs but they're still moving. I'm getting nervous even tho I should be I'm sure.

JLAW - what day did your silkie eggs hatch just recently?

They are not supposed to be wet as you are describing.

Every year once the true cold sets in, our systems get bogged down and we need to reformulate the drying patterns. Because we can never anticipate the effect there is always a chance a wet batch makes it out to our Customers. In addition, occasionally our resellers may store product outside and moisture leaks in.

Regardless, I apologize for the inconvenience and we would be happy to supply you with replacement bedding if you stopped by the Plant in Sherrill. If thats not an option, we can arrange to have it done through CountryMax.

We are currently in the process of acquiring updated equipment which will alleviate this seasonal contention. It is part of our Plant upgrade due this Spring.

Where is this plant in Sherrill? I have gotten my shavings from a friends lumber mill....I was thinking they were dry...maybe not?
Its in the old Oneida Ltd. factory at the light when you would turn to go to Sherrill, turn right instead & go straight under the overpass and its on the right.

Thats what they told me too, but the next batch I bought was just as wet and it was in the summertime.

Yep, I'm sure it is scary for them all. Johnny (man in black-austrolorp) is our other roo that stays in with the hens and he did a wonderful job of getting the hens together and taking cover. But it does sadden me to think they had to see their friend attacked and chowed on. My husband was the one home at the time and even thought he is a "tough guy" it really upset him.
We knew there was some degree of risk, but we have a huge english mastiff and she is in and out throughout the day and I guess we thought she'd scare anything off-b/c she does protect the flock and was good pals with Derk. Lesson learned-we were wrong and everyone is staying on lock down in fully enclosed run until it's warm enough for us to stay out there with them.
I think all these hawk attacks are due to this extreme cold. Not that they couldn't/wouldn't happen anyway. BUt I think it's killing off a lot of other food sources for the hawks.
I'm so sorry that others are feeling the same loss

I have to just try and tell myself it's part of nature and the cycle of life....still stings though.

I don't know but I did mention BYC, as I always do so maybe they'll have a look here and see what people have to say. If I lived near them I'd def. see about delivery of 10 bales every six months.

I don't like dust because the chickens will definitely get some when they're scratching. Not that they won't otherwise, but why increase the risk?

Female needs to be barred or cuckoo male can be any color but white messes with it.

If you are looking for easy Sex links then get yourself a RIR or NH rooster and cross to a Del. Females will be red and males will have the Del pattern. Easy peasy. I'd go with a NH I don't read much on the roosters being mean.

It is something I've considered.

This is the bag. I use to use DE as well, but quit because of the risk of inhaling to the chickens.They are $5.50 a bag, same size as Nobles, but since they are comletely dry, they weigh less, thats even better for my back. Not a beaver on these like the others, horse head instead.

Jlaw - Thanks for the link. I actually found it right after I wrote my post. At first the question just popper up in my head with out to much thought I was more thinking about what my mutts would look like. I knew that my sex links wouldn't produce more sex links so it got me thinking what I would get when and if I hatched my eggs. I was just wondering..But I have learned that I can get sex links with my roo!. I have a Speckled Sussex and I could get some red sex links if I had a Rhode Island White, Salmon Faverolle, Light Sussex, Colombian Leghorn, or a Delaware. If I had to choose I think that I would like to get a few of the Light Sussex or the Delaware and give it a try some day. As for now I just want to see that I get from my SS roo and one of my Blue Marans!

Rancher has the dels cant remember who has the light sussexs someone on here has a few I have one but don't like her I got a bum one.I have two dels from nature berry farm spur of moment buys.
