NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. Busy day at the pharm. Got 4 eggs today. Not looking forward to the snow tomorrow. Running out of space for it. So what plants grow good in partial sun? Trying to decide what to try in my raised bed. Oh--sounds like everyone is feeling like me....cmon spring!

I have a boat full of robins in my backyard flying around from tree to tree....please tell me they're excited because Spring is right around the corner!
Robins are not as smart as some of the other birds. My grandmother always told me what she learned She would always say "An old Indian once told me that Robins are dumb they come back too early, If you want a real sign that spring is here is the Red Winged Black Birds. When they come back then you know that it isn't going to get super cold anymore and that spring is here" I will never forget that story and every year I look for the Red Winged Black Birds.

You may be right. I've been hearing more Jays, and songs in the woods. Saw a pretty Cardinal one day too. Wish there was a way to help them increase.
We have some feeders in the front of our house. We have TONS of Chickadees, Blue jays and Cardinals.

The Jays are very noisy! The other day I looked out the upstairs window into the chicken yard and saw 2 jays sitting on the side of the food bowl eating the food that I had put out. Every morning when I go out in the morning they are always searching around the run looking for anything that the chickens left out on the ground the night before. There has to be about 10 of them. I guess that I don't mind, ever since I have had the chickens we have had lots of Blu jays and crows around the area and it seems to be keeping the hawks away, but did have one the other day, but was far enough that I couldn't get to it to scare it away. I noticed a bunch of birds bothering it then a few minutes later it was gone...Haven't seen it since, but always looking.

Robins don't migrate. They go into the woods for protection from the elements. Last week I saw about 25 male robins eating the berries off some plants in front of a client's house. The bushes were full when I went in the house, empty when I came out. So seeing a robin isn't a sign of spring, it's a sign that the robins feel the weather has improved enough for them to come out of their winter shelter in the woods. (Which may be around the same time spring arrives, but not conclusive proof spring is here)

BTW, same for Red Wind Blackbirds. Saw one the other day out on a fence post.

Now one thing I wonder about is the Buckthorns trees. I noticed some berries and thought birds ate them, but if we eat them they will give us the you know whats. Don't the berries affect the birds digestive tract the same way?

The snow is to deep or I'd got around the top the trees off. I've a plan tom eradicate them.

On the chicken end of things I'm considering getting some Silver Pencil Rock eggs. It doesn't look like I'll be getting more BR's since I have no rooster. So I was thinking SPR's aren't that common, why not get some of those ? I do like the barred birds as they are hard to spot in the grass.

Seems to me if evolution were so, chickens would be green not white or orange or other colors easy to see from high up in the sky. Just musing out loud.

Nice pics Cass. I used to put out feeders but since reading that wild birds can bring disease to my chickens I don't . That and that bird seed is more expensive than chicken feed.

My coop should be here Thursday or Friday...too bad I won't be here to put it together. I think I want to wait anyway. I really like the amount of space the silkies have in the shed now. Plus when I pick up the other three this weekend there is plenty of room to add them in there too. I won't be able to clean out the larger coop for a while. Tried cleaning out rabbit hutches today and everything was frozen! Ugh So I might as well store that coop in the shed and wait until warmer weather to put it together. :-/

Bakin will be happy to give you some red raspberry strands. The folks will be so happy that somebody wants them. Beware, they grow fast, and make large juicy red raspberries.

Luv, I grew up in a city. There was a tree with a blue jay nest in it, the mother bird was killed by a cat and mom took in the only surviving baby blue jay. We weren't experienced with any kind of "wild birds" and didn't have pets so it was quite an experience. We called him Blue, he grew into a beautiful male bird. He would bath every day in the sink of dish water. Mom talked to him and he talked back with that loud squawk. Mom would leave the back hall door open to hang clothes. Eventually he ventured out onto the clothesline but would come back in. He left that fall but came back every year. He got a mate and he would come right up to the back hall door, sit on the clothesline and "yell" until we came out to see him. His mate wouldn't come as close but he was so happy, and behaved like he wanted us to be happy for him. He returned for many years. We learned that blue jays are very clean birds, also clever and happy.

Lynzi, hope all goes well with the new coop set up!

Congratulations Gramma!

Good Morning everyone!

Been busy trying to figure things out. No luck on getting a second job, though someone else found one and has missed three days already out of 4. UGH. My truck is a dead trap but it starts up n that is all that matters!

Chicks are good I'm pretty it was a cat that ate one a couple of weeks ago. They are doing well seem to like being in the snow. They are learning to go in the coop at night.

Egg production has picked up. And we set 16 eggs.

Well off to work hope everyone is well.

Rancher - you are correct - the berries of the buckthorn give humans the runs and same with birds .....

Migrating birds have starved to death when all they have is a belly full of buckthorn berries - so rip up the buckthorn whenever you can ! I am not against things just because they didn't start here - but the buckthorn is dangerous to wildlife.
