My neighbor grew garlic last year. She first sold the scapes, we bought a bag and DH made pesto with them. Later in the year they had the garlic ready and were selling it. She planted a lot and got a lot out of it. We had garlic for MONTHS!

Wount clear work better because the black will reflect more I read that to yse clear on garden to warm soil up fadter then black because it traps more heat were black will repel.
I saw it done with old tires years ago in a Mother Earth News too. You just kept adding more tires and soil. When harvest time came you just tipped it over.I saw a thing on YouTube that you can do the same thing with a 50 gal drum. You start the plant on the bottom and as it grows you add more dirt till it gets to the top. It said that after the first frost and the plant dies that you tip over the barrel and harvest the potatoes out. I would think that you would want to dump it on a tarp or something to keep the dirt.
I know this lady that put all her leaves that she raked up and tied them in black garbage bags after she wetted them down. Then she put them by her garden and left them. In the spring she would dump the bags out and had some great compost. The talk of the garbage bags reminded me of that.

Now thats a great idea. My driveway is not asphalt but I bet I I could buy one of those rubber mats I use as pathways and set it on that. Actually I think I am going to try growing them in a hay bale. The hay bale is suppose to keep them warmer and I bet wrapping the bale in black plastic will keep it even warmer
Quote: I did mine last year just hilling them. What a pain in the rear and very few potatoes. I am going to try something like this with scrap wood I have.
I think I am going to try making a few raised beds in my garden this spring. My friends had old wooden door frames for their garage they let me have. The screening has fell out with the snow but I plan on using them as cold frames. I can get some cinder blocks from the buffalo reuse place I love. Everything is so cheap. I can just set the wood frames on the cinder blocks. I plan on putting new wire over them to keep the hens out with heavy duty plastic over that to keep them warm.
