I think your chances of having somebody there to open up are great. Somebody would be there anyway and usually more than happy to get rid of the chicks. When my chicks came from Murray McMurray last year the distribution center called me at 7am to let me know I could stop by and get them. Also that egg doesn't look fertile to me....
Well, lamb is tasty, but the fuzzy babies are adorable. And baby goals are equally adorable...my husband is working with a fellow on this job who has a farm and they do all things goat. Cheese, milk, meat. We are getting adorable pics of newborns. We were given goat milk to drink, and a container of sauce made with goat meat instead of beef or pork. It was very good. We would need a barn for them, and more electric fencing, but these things are more likely to happen if DH is interested. I am at the point that I need to make site visits, kind of like Why Do Birds, before I dropped the ball.
Goats could save me a lot of time with the brush hog, and make our land more useable....I am not in favor of lamb and kid births, however, as they happen in the middle of the night. I could have a single sex herd...as you can see there is lots of mulling to do.
Single sex herd will not give any milk. For that matter a single gender herd won't give you anything but bills. And goats are far more picky about what they eat than sheep are. If you want your feild cleared you need sheep. And not all animal births happen at night and not all need to be attended by humans. If I had the land I would have goats. (only because Ray has nixed the idea of a minature cow, silly man that he is)

Well I didn't get any eggs yesterday from the silkies but I found one from the lavender in the corner of the nest box really early this morning. It was stone cold so I'm wondering if she layed it late last night after I locked everyone up. Since it's not going in the incubator I decided to crack it open this morning to see if it was fertile. I can't even tell. Doesn't look so good to me so I doubt the two in the incubator will develop. What do you think??
Picture isn't the best for the white dot, I tried changing the coloring a little bit to brighten up the white dot so you could see, didn't really help too much.
Haven't heard from Metzer Farms yet, so I'm assuming they shipped our ducklings. The email confirmation said they would only contact me if they couldn't ship, so I guess we'll see Wednesday. I'm wondering what the chances are of me being able to pick them up at the PO while I'm up there bringing my son to school for 7:30-7:45. They said they usually arrive at the PO between 6:30-8:30 but I know the PO isn't open yet when I'm up there at that time. Do you think if I call they'll make arrangements for someone to open the door for me so I can pick them up??
To me it looks not fertile as the rings are not sharp
PO - if you have a nice Post Master - Probably . Stop & talk to the post Master / not a clerk . He / She would be the one that would make the decision To let you do that .
Hotel your PO TO CALL YOU WHEN THEY ARRIVE. THEY WILL CAUSE THE NOISE WILL BOTHER THEM. Sorry bout caps. No one species will do the job of a brush hog. Each one has their preferences. Goats do like to eat bushes but none of them will eat many weeds. I think cows eat more stuff than others. I know from experience sheep and horses leave weeds. There is a rotation that is said to be the best. First cows. Then sheep. Goats and poultry last. Geese are good weeders now that I think of it. And they say if they have enough space geese can exist on pasture/grassy areas all summer so you don't have to feed them. I'll find out this summer for sure.
Just called my PO and gave them all my info. They said they will call me as soon as they come across the ducklings but also said to stop in at 7:30 after I drop off my son, someone will be there to help me. This will be perfect because she said their deliveries usually get there around 7 and they've unloaded everything by 7:20. so by the time I get there for 7:35 or so they should be all ready for me.

Second I have the PO call me when the truck comes in and I go get them even if I'm in my PJ's. I know our carrier and she has chicken. Just sold her some eggs so she gets an e-mail from me.
I go to the back door and get my chicks or eggs. Ring the bell and sign for them.
It doesn't matter if the PO is open or not, the carriers and clerks are there earlier. They can hear you birds peeping. Give them you number and ask them to call. Though you number should be on the outside of the box. Ideally but not always.
Leave a note with your number for your mailperson.
