NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, lamb is tasty, but the fuzzy babies are adorable. And baby goals are equally adorable...my husband is working with a fellow on this job who has a farm and they do all things goat. Cheese, milk, meat. We are getting adorable pics of newborns. We were given goat milk to drink, and a container of sauce made with goat meat instead of beef or pork. It was very good. We would need a barn for them, and more electric fencing, but these things are more likely to happen if DH is interested. I am at the point that I need to make site visits, kind of like Why Do Birds, before I dropped the ball.

Goats could save me a lot of time with the brush hog, and make our land more useable....I am not in favor of lamb and kid births, however, as they happen in the middle of the night. I could have a single sex herd...as you can see there is lots of mulling to do.
I have heard that goats are better at clearing scrub from fields than sheep. My Sheep are super picky.

Of the 5 births we had, 3 were during the day. Great numbers for us so far, 12 lambs from 5 ewes.

Lamb is very tasty.

this weather is killing me!!!!!

What do you all use for mites?
Wood ash. When mine had mites I dust bathed them in wood ash for like 4 days in a row then 10 days later I did it again. They also have wood ash available all the time now to prevent another infestation.

If you do have mites or lice you will need to remove all your bedding and either bag it or burn it.Then spray down any wood in your coop with neems oil. I actually sprayed with neem a couple of times.

It worked well for me :)

x2 I plan to keep wood ash in the coop this year and outside of it. I've tried everything else and nothing works. I wish I could keep my silkies in the shed all year now because they seem to be doing much better in a more "open" living area than in a coop. But the shed will be much too hot come summer time. I need a barn! LOL

I use Diatomaceous-earth and Exprenex.

If you have mites you might want to paint your roost poles with vegetable or mineral oil.

I also dust inside the nest boxes. These are things you can do to PREVENT mites as well. It's part of my regular routine.

Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I watched a show about a farm on PBS and the guy said the first thing the do is bring in Hogs. Hogs are "rooters". They root for grubs and roots and things like that. They break up the soil and clear the area. They don't necessarily eat the weeds but make it hard for them to grow. Much like chickens when they scratch, exposing the weed roots. So they dry out and die.

Was it here we talked about growing Garlic? I have an old copy of Heirloom Gardening that has an article on garlic, the different types of garlic and how to grow it. I can send it to you if you pay the postage.

Evening all,
Well after a crummy week last week with not getting my silkies, I'm getting a nice trio of splash sizzles! Two of which will be smooth. Can't wait! And along with those I'm getting a cochin/silkie cross pair in black and mottled. I like 'em, they look just like the smooth sizzles with smaller crest feathers. The sizzles are from Sheri Minkner's hatching eggs so I'm super excited to see what those birds end up feathering out like. Her sizzles are beautiful!

These are all coming from MI so hopefully next week will be warm enough to ship. If not, we'll have to wait and see when weather will permit her to ship them.
