NY chicken lover!!!!

Well it made me stop and think about my BM roos and his bloody foot. Their coop has an area right in front where water runs through. Not quite a pool of course but gets some water. With the warm weather and then the cold he might have to a bite. I usually put straw there and haven't but will tomorrow. They are out walking around in the snow like they were snow shoes rabbits. If the snows not to deep they just walk in it. Crazy birds!

Anyhow I have a bale of hay in the garage so I'll put some in front of both half hoops tomorrow. I've been wanting to move the BM hoop back into the woods about 4 or 5 feet so I can put a bigger over hang on it. I just need to figure out how to do it without killing my self.

You can see in this picture where I had put straw down for them. I sprayed his foot with Blue Kote tonight. I have BM eggs in the bator and will be hatching alot of them this year. Then culling in the fall. They're super layers. I had one egg that was very dark. I don't know who is laying it but it must be one of the new hens.

i love the overhang on you hoop coop! btw i know stupid question but what breed is a bm?

Well a chicken died in my arms today ...She was a older comet ...that I was given as a rescue . I think she was at least 3 years old .
I went out to the coop to get eggs ..she was kind of huddled next to the water .
I picked her up ..cradling her in my arm .. she was limp ..I thought she was dead at 1st ...
Checked her responses ..opened her eye ...she focused on me ..pushed on the legs ..she pushed back some
as I brought her inside I noticed there was fluid in her abdominal spaces.
She died shortly after that . I think she may have had heart failure .
I processed her ..the fluid in her abdomen was clear & smelled like chicken broth .
I tried a new way ...instead of dunking in boiling water & plucking feathers ..I just skinned her .Most of the feathers stayed right on the skin
She had a good life here ..Her name was Butter
So sorry for you loss

at least she knew she was loved when she passed

They're here!!! All 11 accounted for, no extras. They made it thru the 14 degree weather!!

They're tiny. I didn't expect the ones I have now to be that much bigger than them. Owell, they'll be extra warmth!
nothing cutter than baby ducklings

they will catch up in no time

I have been seeing information about the State Fair, some of the groups that are coming this year and decided that I needed to call and tell them how disappointing the poultry exhibit is. So I did. I spoke to the manager of the Ag exhibits. She did a lot of telling me all that they do and the positive changes they have made. I told her the things I have seen, sneezing, bare skin, mites, and pecking to bleeding. She said that if such things are seen, they should be reported to the supervisor of the building who has an office next to the overhead door that goes to the track.

She said birds are checked when they arrive for health, vets and all...
There are more staff who are better paid to keep an eye on things.
Vets, both NYS and Cornell are in the building daily.
The stay has been decreased from 12days to 6.
The number of birds exhibited at a time has been decreased to make room for the central educational features.
She did say that people want to bring large numbers of birds because that is how they make their living. I said that that was not reassuring to me, as who knows what they could pick up as they are on tour.
I said that I had heard from other chicken folk that some other state fairs were exceptionally well done, and wondered if there was any way to get info on those. She said that the budget does not include funds for her to travel to other fairs, but she would like to know any ways to improve.
She did say that fairs are much different than shows.
SO, if any of you have gone to other state fairs that were exceptionally well done, she would like to know.

So now that is behind me. But if I see anything this year, I will be in that little office requesting it be fixed.

I did not go last year but heard from others on here how poor and sick the chickens were. I certainly would not show there or bring animals home. I know when I was there the year before last that there was chick chickens also. If they are inspecting chickens before they come in they sure are not looking at them after they are there (my opinion)

Our local fair the chickens were all healthy looking & clean. I want to see how I can get in to show my eggs :)

She spoke to soon. There was an extra Blue Swedish. She offered it to me and of course I said yes. She's so nice could have kept it for herself and all her trouble. I suspect she knows when the time comes she can get some from me at a later date. I suspect the extra was a drake. We shall see.

TSC didn't get their birds in yet. Which is okay cuz I saved some money today.

These are my first ducks and DW stilll doesn't know about them.

Baking - BM is Birchen Marans. Birchen is a feather pattern. Marans is the breed. There are other breeds with the Birchen pattern as well.

Lol Now I REALLY know I'm tired from the lack of sleep I've gotten this week! I counted those ducks over and over, I swear it appeared out of mid-air. ;-) Let us know what your wife's response is to them. Oh and in a few weeks, be sure to let us know what your new preference is, ducks or chickens? ;-)

Godspeed lil comet.

My insane work schedule left me with 15 pages to read through! Where to start...

Metella---I would be interested in a couple of those trees you have. Not sure how to cram it into my car but I will figure it out.

Framac--You have to nuke the coop. I used permethryn spray after I cleaned it all out. Sprayed the crap out of it, used tsc garden/poultry dust all over inside then shavings. Did the whole thing again two weeks later. Do inside and outside of the coop and every single surface including ceilings and corners. Its the only way I got rid of them in my one coop. I also gave the cheeps a bath in warm water and used dawn dish detergent on them. Poured it right on the worst spots and rubbed it in well. Washed them up well and rinsed well. Used the poultry/garden dust on them after they were dry and treated them with ivermectin pour on. I won the war .

Egg laying is picking up and I will set some soon. I have orders for mutt chicks and silkies. Just need my blue pen to start laying. I just want the cold and snow to leave.
