NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a LG incubator and I guess they are the worst. We only heat with wood so the house temp drops over night and so does the bator. And then during the day the house temps rise and so does the bator. Today it got up to 104 I quick tool the top off and lowered the gage. We are headed to a friends house tonight and I bet it will be low when we get back. I think that's our main prob. Also at first I think I was adding to much water.

We have the same problems when we hatch eggs early on in the year. We heat with wood, have 5 cats, so I have to set the incubator up in the bathroom with the door shut. Last year I went along with the New Years Day hatch and my temps were all over the place. I was so surprised when so many hatched. I found that by saving the box that the bator came in and setting the incubator in the bottom half of the box, helped a lot. Some also recommended to cover the top also but I never felt comfortable doing that. It's so crazy that I wonder why I find it so much fun. (I also wonder what just happened to my font? lol)

What I'd suggest is to buy an oil filled electric heater and put it in a room with the incu. You can then maintain a steady temp in the room or one that varies just a bit. Do this when you are using your incu for the 21 days.

I'm using one in a bedroom to start my plants for the garden.

What kind of goose again?

Forgot to mention I had my furnace serviced today! After talking about Dachshunds with the guys for a half an hour after he saw mine he finally got to cleaning it! LOL I guess his wife shows them so he was asking where I got mine from because the woman I got him from also shows out west and is doing really well! Anywho...Everything is looking good, no more smelly oil fumes. He cleaned it, replaced the oil filter, some nozzle and a couple of other things. Said it really wasn't really wasn't that bad and that maybe I just have a very sensitive sense of smell (like most women do). But he said everything is running fine, nothing needed fixing and there was nothing broken. So that's good. At least I feel better about my furnace. Thanks everyone for the recommendations!

The baby chix are so cute. Good job hatching!

So unhappy to think of you ordering chicks and opening the boxes to find the poor things dead. Hugs to you both.

I am happy that today has been so pleasant. Melt, Melt, Melt.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! Yes, I'm shouting at those who steered me towards Natureberry farm! I just got back and have 6 beautiful little peeps - 2 each Welsummer, Barnvelder & SLW. I was very impressed with the cleanliness, set-up and friendliness of Jim. I will certainly be going back and recommending them to friends and chicken people,. You all rock guys!!

Buff American :) She's really hard to take a picture of because she's either burying herself in chicks or, as soon as I take her out, trying to snuggle up to me and shoving her face in my hair. Not that I'm complaining about the snuggling :love

Could not resist the cuteness at Cortland TSC. 6 banties, 2 red pullets, 2 tetra tints. So hubby has his production pullets and I have my first unknown breeds and first banties!

I was there this afternoon and saw the bantams. I was tempted, but not really. I ended up talking to a few people about their birds. The guy that was getting the chicks for 1 couple was clueless. He had to keep asking a different guy information about the different chickens that they had. I even helped him out. They had a huge batch of pekins and I was in love. I came home and had to hold my little girls. I am thinking that my pekin is a girl, she is as loud as the other 2 girls. If I don't go in the back room every hour to check on them I hear her calling. It almost sounds like a Guinea pig.
