NY chicken lover!!!!

Gotta question about my muddy ducks. Can I just give them a thing of water once a day and a dish of gruel to eat. They just empty the water and make a mess. I don't even think they drink it. Just splash it around the brooder.

I swear I hear the laughing as I close the door. Those pics of them smiling? I think it a Smirk and they need a good smack!

Use a bigger dish/tub for water that they can't knock over. I cut the bottom of an ALL laundry detergent jug. I clean it out once a day, don't go crazy trying to keep it clean. Remember when they go out side they're going to be drinking/drinking muddy water and whatever water they swim in outside.

P.S. They WILL want to swim in it too!

Just a quick tip y' all.

I like to take and get the "silicon" packets when I'm at the shoe store. (remember I have girls) or from items bought and put them in with my tools or right now my incu when I pack it up so they don't rust.

And the second red pullet chick has passed. Called Darin at TSC and he took down my info so I can pick up 2 replacement chicks. Guess they were shipped in during the really cold weather and many have failed.
Little girl is only 3.5 but she is learning this death thing more than i expected her to know. She was warned the chick was very sick and might not make it. We had BBQ chicken for lunch, which we have never brought that association up, but she obviously had. She told me that we cut up dead chickens and eat them. Why yes honey we do. And apparently some chickens don't like being dead.
Then I moved the sick chick into a small box in the brooder so the tetra-sarus would stop pecking it. As we were watching the chick it went through the final death spasms. We talked about it and she is comforting me with hugs, cuddles and reassurance. (I'm ok really, but glad she is understanding empathy).
So this has been my day so far, going to start some seeds after nap time.

The snow is melting fast and the yard is quickly turning into mud again. After digging around out there I finally found the drain that catches all the water runoff from my yard!!

Got it all cleaned out and the water is draining fast. Hope it keeps running good so all is dry come spring.

Just got back from Tully Hardware, while checking out I asked him if they only order what people come in and pre-order or if they have extras to sell and he wasn't sure how many extras they'd have. But the birds they are taking pre-orders for are Barred Rocks, Red Stars, Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, Delaware and Ameraucauna. They are ordering from Murray McMurray Hatchery and yes you have to buy 6 of course. Ohh and it seems as though according to their pamphlet they made that they will be ordering pullets, not straight run because these prices reflect the female price not Straight Run according to their website. For example, their flyer for BRs pullets has them listed at $3.25 each and the website lists them at $3.22 whereas SR on the website is $2.82.

I wish Tractor Supply would have some of the specialty breeds. Here, we get the basic breeds and that's it. I'd love to find a few Buff Orpingtons, a couple Delaware and a Frizzle roo to breed with a few of my larger hens. Geneva had Buff Orpingtons, I called first, they said yes, so I drove the nearly 2 hours only to find out they had 1 but in order to get it I had to buy 5 others of a different breed. NY rule, you know. (Ironically, the Amber Sex Link pullet turned out to crow.)

!!! How far are you from me? I don't recall the Finger Lakes being that bad of a drive. If you wanted to give either Tully Hardware or the Marcellus Hardware store a call and place an order, I wouldn't mind helping you out with meeting you half way to get them to you...Just a thought if that's what you're looking for and can't find them elsewhere. The pamphlet I got from Tully says this starts April 24th so I'm sure that's when they're going to get their first batch in.
