NY chicken lover!!!!

OMG just came across this video one of my friends in CT posted! She was on the news (the one holding the little girl in the video) because the house across the street had 193 chickens inside of it! Yes, 193! This was in the town that borders my hometown in Ct.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in CT too. Can't imagine 193 chickens in one house, even if it is a big house. And in Plainville the houses are so close together. Very sad that the birds all had to be euthanized.

I love that my chickens and geese can live happily outside.

Gotta question about my muddy ducks. Can I just give them a thing of water once a day and a dish of gruel to eat. They just empty the water and make a mess. I don't even think they drink it. Just splash it around the brooder.

I swear I hear the laughing as I close the door. Those pics of them smiling? I think it a Smirk and they need a good smack!

Use a bigger dish/tub for water that they can't knock over. I cut the bottom of an ALL laundry detergent jug. I clean it out once a day, don't go crazy trying to keep it clean. Remember when they go out side they're going to be drinking/drinking muddy water and whatever water they swim in outside.

P.S. They WILL want to swim in it too!

I do a similar thing with mine. I used a half gallon milk jug and cut a hole in one side that I use for the water. They usually stay out of it, but I let them swim in the sink almost every afternoon. I clean their water out everyday. I usually clean their brooder when they are swimming. Then it is blow dryer time. But they are still messy. I'm trying to work out some ideas to make them a bigger area so that I don't have to clean it everyday. Every couple days would be nice.

I said to my husband I can't even imagine ONE chicken living inside my house, nevermind 2, 3 or 200!

Where in CT did you grow up??

Dry incubation, love it!

I don't know why I didn't think to go back to that method earlier. My first hatch that I tried I was down to 4 eggs, never added any water. Well they all made it up until lockdown, I never added any water at the end either. So you would think a light bulb would have gone off back then to say add water at lockdown only! LOL

I wish Tractor Supply would have some of the specialty breeds. Here, we get the basic breeds and that's it. I'd love to find a few Buff Orpingtons, a couple Delaware and a Frizzle roo to breed with a few of my larger hens. Geneva had Buff Orpingtons, I called first, they said yes, so I drove the nearly 2 hours only to find out they had 1 but in order to get it I had to buy 5 others of a different breed. NY rule, you know. (Ironically, the Amber Sex Link pullet turned out to crow.)

I realize you're a bit aways but I have Delaware chicks and I believe one of them may be a frizzle. If it's a roo he's yours. I only keep the hens which hasn't been many cuz I can breed them to any other roo to get more.

I know their eggs when they lay cuz they're a bit smaller and the shell is smooth. I have some eggs on the counter but am leaving in 12 day so can't start a hatch. I'm hoping for some fathered by my Aruacana roo or an EE.

What size bin do you have them in? Do you have a heat light over them? Are they in your house? What size jug is it?

it's a 116Qt Rubbermaid bin which may be a bit small for 5 ducklings of this size by now. I use a 1.96 gallon laundry detergent jug, one of the ones that usually runs $17.99 at the store (you may not don't buy that size if it's only you and your wife doing laundry) cut in half and filled with water. But anything that's close to that size will do. Even you have a large enough brooder where you could fit one of the small Rubbermaid bins in it like this

anything about that size that can hold water and wont easily tip over will do.

I just took the heat lamp off of them yesterday when the chicks hatched since they needed it and I only have one. They are doing fine. It's stays about 70 upstairs in that old office room of mine.

I said to my husband that our 9 chickens living outside are nothing compared to 200 in the CT house.

The girls were so happy scratching around in the grass today where the snow has melted. The geese were so happy digging to china in the mud puddles left by the melted snow. Makes me happy to see them out there. Hopefully soon there will be new grass shoots & live bugs for them to find. Heartbreaking to think of what the chickens in Plainville went through.

My ducks are in an unheated back room with two lights. If I move them to the pool I'll still move the lights over them. I'm trying to get rid of all unnecessary chicks and roosters before I leave for TX. Perhaps even some older hens who are still laying. I've got eggs coming out my ears. I think my Dels are laying two a day, just to drive me crazy.
