I have two Dorking Roos in a 5x8 breeding pen with their girls & 2 Orpington Roos in another breeding pen with theirs. No prob. The "favorite" Orp girls are a bit worse for wear, if you catch my drift.
I could pull any of the Dorkings out tomorrow & put them in a show cage. Ahh -- except for Rex who lost his tail feathers wrestling with me during his NPIP test! At least now we can all tell them apart!
That said -- when we put all the boys in the bachelor pad, they all fight for dominance. I pulled the Orp boys to give the girls a rest. I would love to pull the Lav Ameraucana boy, but he's a nasty little bugger & picks fights. Since I plan on showing him & the white Amer rooster, I may have to build them little single pens. The Dorking boys are so gentle, they can be left with the girls all the time.
You sound like me telling the kids who can free range with who. Spike and Little Boy Blue can go out together but don't put Shadow and his girls out with Spot and his girls or they'll go at it. I have 4 pens, a broody and her chicks house, a brooder house full of 8 week olds and a hutch with Quail. Oh and the goats. Don't let the goats out if ANY of the chickens are out or they will go in the hen pens and eat all the chicken feed.
Hahahahahaha!! Yep!! Have to carefully manage the playdates around here too!
If we're having company, the Orps aren't allowed to range, because Elton is an attack rooster. The Dorkings mingle nicely with guests.
Rex is my favorite alarm clock for teenagers camping in the yard!
I'm letting my 2 broody silkies sit in their normal coops. I tried it last summer & it worked out nicely. I used to put them in their own pen, but they integrate the chicks right into the flock this way.
