NY chicken lover!!!!

Sooo happy it finally stopped raining! I goty big coop moved to the top of the hill, got the duck house cleaned out and moved up as well, and I now have three pens up there that I made with my poultry netting! Oh! And my blue Orp hen is in the nestbox getting ready to lay an egg!!!!! So excited!!

I just looked back, and it was January of last year that my two roosters stopped living together in harmony. But January last year had some warm weather, which probably signaled spring to the chickens. The one I gave away is Reveille and he is the subject of my avatar now. Good luck with your boys.
I have got to learn to do glass. Very nice avatar.

RANCHER -
"Because of Winn Dixie" was a very good book; Shane read that for his English class last year. It's a beautiful story, told with humor.

LYNZI -
Sorry about your baby bunnies. I hope the remaining ones survive. You're doing all you can...

GLASSHEN -
That piece is STUNNING. Just a beautiful piece of art. I love it! And I remember your stories of rooster wars last year!

I have a "Bucket list" of books to read and Winn Dixie was one. They are not all so easy though.

I know that Bill Clinton had a list of books he's read but I didn't have a pencil when he was naming them.

Sad news from my coop. I lost my first hen -- my Coronation Sussex, "Cracker."
sad.png
I'm fairly certain she had coccidiosis, and although I started treatment with Corid, I believe I caught the clue too late and she died this morning. I feel so bad.

I've got the rest of the flock on Corid in their drinking water for the next few days to finish the recommended treatment.

I'm a little confused about coccidia. I've read it's in most or all chicken's intestinal tracts to some degree, and was advised against using medicated feed to help them develop a natural resistance. So I've never fed medicated feed. Now that I'm fairly certain this is what Cracker died from (she had most of the classic symptoms) and I'm treating the flock, should I start feeding medicated feed, at least on a rotational basis? Or should I use Corid once in a while throughout the year as a preventative instead? (Similar to worming my horse each season.) Apparently the parasite is very difficult to remove once it's in your soil, so I'm assuming it's here to stay.

Anyone with advice based on their experiences, please feel free to share your thoughts. Thanks.

Feeling sad for Cracker and somewhat guilty being a newbie and taking too long to catch the clue that she needed help sooner than I gave it to her...

She was a hen with a humorous personality and I'll miss her.

I just hope the course of Corid prevents the others from getting ill. I'm sort of nervous about that now.

I WANT TO THANK HENICILLIN for her help in getting me to a good, informative link on dosing with Corid for coccidiosis. Because of her post about her sick turkeys, I was able to put 2 and 2 together and figure out what was going on with my sick hen...not in time to save her, but hopefully keep my others alive and well. THANK YOU, HENI.

TOB - I'm so sorry for your loss of your hen. Don't beat yourself up over it, most of us on this thread, even tho we may not be newbies to owning chickens, we are newbies to what illness they may have/catch. At least you have figured out what it may be that has caused her passing and are taking precautions to treat the rest of your flock. :) Hugs!

Thanks for the complements, it was the only piece of glass I made last year, production and motivation were down. Rancher, I have taught a bit, so that option is open. Edited to add the most important thing, TOB I am sorry about Cracker. You did the best you could for her, and as Lynzi said we're all learning.

I had hoped that would be able to clean out the duck hut, but I have spent most all day shoveling water off our back pad. There is a huge amount of ice and it is blocking the flow so it is pooling on the pad. It takes less then 30 minutes and the water has came back all the way to our back door. I moved the baby ducks to their bigger movable pen. I wheel it out during the day then wheel it back in at night, but with the porch flooding they had to stay in today. Hopefully I'll be able to get to it tomorrow before DH goes back to work. He has been on vacation this week!

Came home and started chicken chores, cuz I do them first before I sit down...might never get up again, ya know. I walk in the coop and look under the nest boxes for eggs (cuz why lay them IN the box when UNDER them is more private. LOL) And there are EYES stareing back at me. OMG. A racoon is curled up trying to stay dry IN the chicken coop. I may have solved the "where are the eggs" mystery. He was actually curled up around an egg.

I know, I know....he won't be able to do that again, cuz he would do it again. (Had to wait for Ray to get home tho, cuz I don't know where he keeps the guns. I guess I should ask that very valuable question)
