NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello everyone, sorry I wasnt on yesterday, We had a chicken bbq at the fire department i'm in so I was at that for a while, then i actually went golfing with some of the people from the department. Was a very busy day and now that i'm finally home i need to clean the brooder and get some sleep.

Also got angry because went I went to collect eggs when I got home I found that my local raven pair had helped themselves! Must have walked right in the pop door and then raided the duck nest and all the chicken nesting boxes. All the duck eggs were gone, and I only got three eggs that must have been laid after the ravens left. I was really mad because I hadn't collected eggs yesterday as I'm trying to encourage someone to go broody.
Wow, I am inundated with broodies - I even have a semi broody leghorn! =) Four cochins are broody, one leghorn and one leghorn X so far.. Oh, and an easter egger. My little princess that's never unbroody is thinking about it again. argh. :)

Morning all,
Despite the rain it was a good day yesterday. Good some stuff planted, new beds made all with help from the Ladies! Too cold & wet for the little ones to be out - better today hopefully. We have a pair of Redtails nesting somewhere close by, so they are keeping an eye on the baby pen just in case someone escapes. I have the pen covered so they should be quite safe. Today is supposed to be nice, so off to do some logging fingers crossed. Have a good day all.

Nice purchase Lap! Even if it was pricey ;-) that's what we need for these two monsters over here. However, our yard is a hill at the very bottom of a mountain so it would be tough to find a spot in the yard level enough to put one. I would want to get one from a place that will come out it together too. My daughter already spotted the one in Sam's Club two weeks ago. :-/

This is really the only level spot we have, and there is a rock under one leg, so we have some leveling to do. Going to put down weed guard and mulch so I don't have to mow around it. This is Amish built and much better quality than the Lowes or Sams one. And I don't mean "Amish built" store, this is an actual Amish man that dad knows. The quality is amazing, he sands all the edges smooth. Everything was assembled for the auction, then they took off the ladder, slide, cross beam and the a-frame. All fit in the back of dad's truck. Then it was just put those few pieces back together. May stain or polyurethane it, of course that will require dry weather and we are going to be rainy for at least a week.

Alright folks....who's ready for a round of NAME THAT CHICKEN!!!!!!

As I mentioned last night, I picked up some TSC chicks...cleaned out their assorted bantams and added four Australorps into the mix. Of the eight bantams, one is a silkie (five toes and feathered shanks...gray bill and black skin...cute as a button and a welcome surprise as I've always wanted a silkie).

I have no idea what the other 7 are. So here's a pic:

This little one is actually pretty unwell. Just sits there. Doesn't even flinch when you reach in to pick him up. I was surprised he made it through the night. But in anycase, the other 7 look just like him.

As for the silkie...I'm assuming it's a white silkie...but to make sure:

Pyxis - what clues it was the ravens ? Just wondering as I have a family of them I encourage - or at least don't discourage - to hang around my area .... Could be a rat ? In my old barn I was missing eggs and found a rat hole/tunnel .... set traps on each end and the rat MOVED the trap and still was nabbing eggs for a while ..... Ate them whole - they just disappeared.

Thinking that may be your varmint since you have a similar thing in your workshop - mysterious and total disappearance.

Morning all. Breezy and sunny this morning but a bit cool. Babies are eating lots more now so I had to go to a 50 pound bag of chick feed. I let Little Man out with his girls to freerange this morning along with Junior. Little Man is parading around the yard with the girls. I think Junior made a move on one of the girls as there was commotion out there then he was doing his scared bawking. Little Man probably schooled him again. I am hoping it warms up so I can put the brats out again today. Have to finish getting my raised beds built too. Lots of rock hauling. Locked down my silkies last night. Nothing yet but its a game of patience. If my hatching trend continues, they probably wont hatch till tomorrow or the day after. I have to candle the eggs under the girls in the coop to see how many are viable.

Enjoy the day everyone.

It is soooo quiet around here. Butchering is done. The Girls are still looking over their sholder to see if they are going to get jumped, but they will get over it. I only kept one for me. One is going to Horsekeeper and one is going to my ex-husband and his girlfriend. So when all is said and done, I will have ONE rooster. Not to worry....I have ordered another one to go with my auto-sexing girls.......and a couple of marans to get at the picnic...probably one of them will be a roo....so I am not going to be a one roo farm long.

But I can't beleive the quiet. It is sooooo relaxing. I think I'll go back to bed and enjoy the peace.
