NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi Lynzii, so sorry to hear about you duck.  It's hard to believe that someone could hit him and not stop.

Rancher I hope you get a 100% hatch!

Today we tried an experiment, my boy wanted to play with the birds so he took the 2 hen (?) chickens away from the roo to see what the roo would do.  :gig We tease that poor bird!  All he did was make clucking noises.  My son then chased the frizzle around the kitchen for a while, these birds move very slow, trying to get it to exercise a bit.  :weee

Last night the black silkie got it's head stuck in the dog cage while the roo was going to town so we did an intervention.  We moved the silkie to a laundry basket for the night with food and water.   The silkie did really good alone, it looked relieved.  I had it in my lap for at least an hour until she fell asleep in a nice warm towel.  She's a very content bird.  I hope it's a she, o/w it may need counseling.  Fredo seems to be turning into quite the guy  :bun Not only that Fredo bit my son twice!  We may have to get a sign "Beware of Chicken" so people know we are protected!  :lau   If any of these birds ever lays an egg we will jump for joy!:ya

Wait.....so you just let your chickens roam around your house.... :sick

I don't even like to brood chicks in the house.

DH came home from work this afternoon with news of having to move again :-( I'm not sure when, but we'd be heading back to the Albany area. I have mixed feelings on this because although I did love living in Latham and loved the schools there, I don't see us getting as lucky as we did with this property and finding something that is "in the sticks" and allows us to keep raising chickens. :-/

Oh, I am sorry. I know how hard even the thought of moving is, much less actually doing it. See we have been in the yes we have to move but then we don't, even though we NEED to for 11 years. What is really crazy is what are the odds of this, right now you live 20 minutes from us, we have been drooling over your rooster Gru that you got from Canastota, your hen is from Oneida who is a Lavender Orpington. We have only two Lavender Orpingtons which we ordered as we did not know anyone around here that had them. We live minutes from Canastota, Oneida being my old stamping grounds when I was growing up. My husband is from Latham and still works in Albany. Yes, he drives back and forth everyday for work, yes that is crazy I know, but he does not want to move to Albany for reasons that might sound worst then they really are.

(Plus my family is all here and the kids have ponies and I have a horse at my sisters house.) She gives them lessons and they show, which we could not do out there. (Money wise, and I am not able to train for english jumping like she can,) The kids absolutely do not want to leave their school (Faith Heritage, which we love.) nor all their cousins. Meanwhile over the last 11 years I have looked around in Albany area trying to find some farmland so I know what you mean. Every time I really get looking to save my DH from having to drive I realize how fortunate we have what we have here. Anyway, I only just started reading through this site, and my husband is always amazed whenever Latham is brought up. He is silly like that.

I'm outside of Albany, when you move will you be looking to rent or buy? We actually live in Delanson...it's country-ish. We had a heck of a time finding something to buy in our price range with a couple acres, decent house, and relatively close to work (east greenbush).

I also lived in Latham for several years, loved it! But not conducive to raising chickens and other livestock.

We would need to rent because the plan after that is for him to move up to a position that requires him to travel often and we need to be in a "centralized" location. So we may even have to move into PA after that.

Evening all. Came home to seven silkies hatched out so far and 2 are pipping. Hoping for more hatching going on overnight. Moved the seven into the brooder downstairs. Brats out in the coop are doing well. Taking the cooler weather okay. Of course the coop is rather snug anyways and there are 20 of them in there.

Rancher--if you werent so far away I would gladly take your very important eggs and hatch them out for you. My hatches in my bator have been fantastic. I hope you find a solution to your problem.

Lynzi--moving stinks and I hope that you find someplace good where you can have your critters.

I had a cute silkie roo once. His name was Mumbles. I held him and he cuddled with me and loved to be with me. He was a great pet. Then I got more silkies and put him with them. He was good at first, then started to attack me and dh. He wouldnt stop, no matter what I did. He got me really good on my ankle when I had my back turned one day. I found a new home for him on a farm. His new owner put him in with the big chickens and they taught him some manners. Ever since then, I have never coddled or handled any rooster that much. I learned my lesson. Hands off roosters unless necessary. Your chickens are chickens and need to be treated as such.

Speaking of roosters, Bill is getting to be a pain in the you know what. Since he has already done his duty, he may be going to canning camp sooner rather than later. I already have replacements growing out in the other coop and I am sure the ladies would love to have a break from all the mating he does. Dh has also had it with him. I expect it wont be too long before the deed is done.

I hope everyone is doing well despite the heavy rain. I have been reading bad stories on some of the other chicken sites Im on of people losing their homes or chickens to the terrible storms they are getting. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Yes, 3 of them. They tend to scrunch together in a box. It's so cute! They are for our entertainment. If they make a messy in the box we just get another box. Very easy keepers. Eventually we will allow them to move into a larger coop like area in the back hall. And eventually we will bring them to our farm, just as soon as we can get there! We are allergic to cats, dogs, rodents, and other hairy creatures. We have been cat sitting a pet cat, not mine, for 10 years for a relative who dropped it off. It stays outside most of the year TG!

At one time we did have a goldfish and it was very nice but got big and so had to be rehomed. We don't have a dog, don't want any dogs.

There's no way we'd ever let it into the house, with the allergies. I read about the LGD's but it's not really a venture that I'm keen on getting involved with. So far we're having excellent luck with allergies and the birds! Another good thing is that the birds enjoy baths in the sink which is fun for us and keeps them clean! We picked Silkie and Silkie mix breed because we read that they are the gentlest birds available. We were hoping for lap chickens. So far so good, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

OH NO!!!! He will get spurs someday. I know that you are listening to everyone's warnings. Just be careful. Roosters can turn on you at any time. I thought that my roo was a nice calm roo. He came after me from under the coop Monday again. He doesn't have that many chance before he is going to be going. Does anyone want a Speckled Sussex Rooster? seriously He's a year old If not he may be dinner some night soon.
. No thanks, I have my own mean Speckled Sussex rooster :| Yours is prettier tho! Where in CNY are you?

Well speaking of mean roosters let me set some folks straight.

I had a barred rock and he hit me good more than once. I hurt for days after that. What's more they can and will FLY in your face. You'd learn a hard lesson if they took your childs eye out. Spurs or no spurs.

I once had a broody hen hit me good when I tried to mess with her two chicks.

Now for those who think it's cute to let the kids torment your chickens I will be very firm. You should not have animals. It's mean and cruel. It's teaching kids bad animal husbandry practices. There is a proper way to deal chickens and I suggest you learn what that is.

I've been clear that I'm not fond of Silkies but I would never harm one. Not for any reason. The one time I did have Silkies the rooster was NOT gentle and meek. Some are and some are not. He wasn't mean but he sure didn't like to be messed with.

I've instructed everyone who goes near my chickens to move slow, gentle and be calm. Not to make any sudden moves. Stressing out your chickens is a good way to kill them. It can bring on disease and other problems. Perhaps you don't care?

Please if you're the type of person who tortures and pesters your animals or allows your kids to do so, please don't advertise it here.

All right I'm done.
