NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi Lynzii, so sorry to hear about you duck. It's hard to believe that someone could hit him and not stop.

Rancher I hope you get a 100% hatch!

Today we tried an experiment, my boy wanted to play with the birds so he took the 2 hen (?) chickens away from the roo to see what the roo would do.

We tease that poor bird! All he did was make clucking noises. My son then chased the frizzle around the kitchen for a while, these birds move very slow, trying to get it to exercise a bit.

Last night the black silkie got it's head stuck in the dog cage while the roo was going to town so we did an intervention. We moved the silkie to a laundry basket for the night with food and water.

The silkie did really good alone, it looked relieved. I had it in my lap for at least an hour until she fell asleep in a nice warm towel. She's a very content bird. I hope it's a she, o/w it may need counseling. Fredo seems to be turning into quite the guy

Not only that Fredo bit my son twice! We may have to get a sign "Beware of Chicken" so people know we are protected!

If any of these birds ever lays an egg we will jump for joy!

Marquisella & Pyxis have made a very good point about roosters. I work in an emergency room and believe it or not, I have seen some very nasty facial injuries on kids that got in way of a rooster.

Lynzi, sorry about your duck

On my way to Metella's the other day I almost took out someone's pet duck. It was just standing in the road and couldn't be bothered to move when the car came up on it. I had to go around it slowly. I told it it was lucky I owned ducks or someone not quite as fond of them may have wiped it out.

Why do birds, you probably don't want your son chasing your frizzle. They're prey animals and she was probably terrified. They aren't like dogs, they don't need to be walked and get excersize like that. They move slow because they're feather footed and it slows them down. My bantam cochins do a slow waddle.

Also, your rooster is biting people now. That's a sign that he's going to be aggressive. I'll say it again, it won't be cute when he flies up at your son's face spurs first. You really need to get a handle on the situation before it gets worse, because it's really not cute. Not trying to be harsh, I just don't feel like you're listening to us. Your son chasing around one of his hens is not going to help things at all.

Thank you. I can't understand why anyone would let their kids terrorize they're animals. If there is a good reason for doing so please let me know what it is.

DH came home from work this afternoon with news of having to move again :-( I'm not sure when, but we'd be heading back to the Albany area. I have mixed feelings on this because although I did love living in Latham and loved the schools there, I don't see us getting as lucky as we did with this property and finding something that is "in the sticks" and allows us to keep raising chickens. :-/

In over 29 years in medicine I've never encountered a chicken attack! That must be a rural hospital? I'll take your word for it though. I absolutely abhor emergency medicine. We do try to avoid it at all costs, no pun intended. There's enough "routine care" out there to keep me going for a lifetime! Never knew how the ER folks could manage those schedules. God bless you all. My preference was always for stuff like geriatrics, heme/onc, endocrinology, micro/immunology, and the like.

We saw a chicken with spurs and Fredo only has tiny bumps, no spur things yet. Maybe it'll grow someday? If it gets one we'll watch out for it!

My baby is 13. He's a big kid, bigger than me! We all grab the chickens around the wings/body and hold them like we're holding a starbucks!

Then we talk to them. These birds are a kick. The most amazing thing is that he was playing with them for at least an hour and no allergies!

He's off everything. 2 years ago he was on daily Flonase, Claritin, pseudofed, and occasional inhalers. This is a child who can't even walk through a barn at the fair without wheezing!

As soon as Fredo hears us he goes nuts, he absolutely has to talk to us. Thanks for the concern, but really, these guys are the size of a flashlight! We're not too worried at this point! I guess if he got really out of control we could turn him into a stew! J/K! Thanks for the input though!

Why do birds- I can understand that you're not afraid of your alien silkie, but did you think maybe the bird is afraid of you guys?? Why would you want to torment a defenseless little animal? I'm also still trying to figure out why you're treating chickens as cats, they belong outside. They need to get fresh air and be chickens, that's what they are after all.

The fact that you're not concerned is what concerns me. Just because he's small doesn't mean he can't pack a punch. Yes, his spurs will grow in, and they are long, they hurt, and he will know how to use them. Just because he doesn't have spurs yet doesn't mean he doesn't have really sharp claws. Really I'm just concered because I had a mean rooster once. It hurts. They can cut you through a pair of jeans. It's nothing to mess with. Next time he bites someone that someone needs to forcefully pin him to the ground and hold him there for a few minutes to establish dominance. And you need to stop doing things that will get him worked up, like chasing his hens. Anyway, that's the last I'll say about it.

He will get spurs someday. I know that you are listening to everyone's warnings. Just be careful. Roosters can turn on you at any time. I thought that my roo was a nice calm roo. He came after me from under the coop Monday again. He doesn't have that many chance before he is going to be going.

Does anyone want a Speckled Sussex Rooster? seriously

He's a year old
If not he may be dinner some night soon.

Well, not sure if it was related to the power going out yesterday, but I did lose one of the EEs. Looks like he may have drowned in the egg, but I can't really tell. Everybody else seems fine...though I still have three eggs to hatch tomorrow. Fingers crossed they do alright! The humidity in the incubator hovered at 90% for the majority of the power outage (over an hour and a half). I opened the vent all the way, but couldn't get the humidity to come down...the windows fogged up, etc. I did open the bator just a bit, but didn't want to open it much for fear of losing heat out of it.

In the meantime, I've got a brood box full of babies and everybody is doing well. I really hope the two Marans eggs hatch! I've been wanting this breed for some time now!

I'm outside of Albany, when you move will you be looking to rent or buy? We actually live in Delanson...it's country-ish. We had a heck of a time finding something to buy in our price range with a couple acres, decent house, and relatively close to work (east greenbush).

I also lived in Latham for several years, loved it! But not conducive to raising chickens and other livestock.
