NY chicken lover!!!!

Don't recommend any particular brand I purchased mine at reactor supply just drop them in the bucket or watered and plug them in no frozen waters all winter. A barn would be perfect you could build pens and do not get this girl started but you do not need heat. Watch out for the Morehens disease this girl likes to shop and is very girlie I probably have more shoes than the hotel queen but once I started with my chickens that Morehens disease caught up and this girl got lots of chickens and a pair of coach rain boots for my warm weather barn boots. LOL!

do they glow green?

Hey all, my grandfather passed away this morning so I may be absent for a few days. Just wanted to check in so that no one was worried if I didn't post for a while.

I am sorry for your loss and you are right I do worry and wonder where folks go. I have no chicken friends in the immediate vicinity.

Take care,

Rancher

Hello all -- been away from the forum for a couple of months (oh those pesky work/life details that get in the way!). Sorry to hear about the recent losses, and hope everyone is otherwise doing well. We added this little bit of ridiculousness to the family last month - he's also keeping us busy and will further postpone any serious poultry breeding on my part. Someday....

Sorry about your grandfather, Pyxis.

I love my heated dog bowl for the winter. It holds a gallon, I run a cord out to the coop and it heats the water enough so it doesn't freeze. If the temp is over 40 it doesn't heat. I just would bring out a jug of water, toss the yucky water and dry the bowl with a paper towel, pour in fresh...done with that chore.

.

This is a great site. It's given us many great ideas, particularly for housing of birds, such as the hoop coops, and other safe housing options that we are considering for when we move. Our goals are to have safe housing with some form of climate control so that water doesn't freeze. We are considering many options at this time. Thanks everyone for all of the positive input!

Ahhh....you don't control the climate you buy a heated dog bowl or spend the big bucks and get a heated chicken waterer. (Or you google "cookie tin heaters" and make a heater to sit under the waterer you already own)

The debate about heating chicken coops rages in heated discussions (pun intended). The VAST majority say that chickens are wearing a down coat and providing supplimental heat only increases the humidity in the coop and thereby increases the incidences of respiratory infections in your birds. I don't think anyone on this thread heats their chicken coop. So you can save money on your coops by just building them to have proper ventalation and be free from drafts on the roosting area. Just don't add heat. Please. You will be killing your birds slowly by doing so.

Agreed. You're doing your birds more harm than good by heating their coop. Neither of my coops are heated and I haven't lost one bird to cold weather. I have a heater that I stick under the metal waterer (I think it cost me $14) and the water stays liquid...There is absolutely no need to heat a coop.
