NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. The place was in an uproar when I got home. The chicks were out of food and complaining loudly. Amazing how quiet it gets when everyone eats! Gotta get them out in the coop. Just have to figure out how to rig up something to keep the older ones away from the younger ones. My project for tomorrow.

Today was a sad day for our town. You may have seen it on the news. Sgt Shawn Farrell was killed in Afghanistan a few days ago. His body was flown in to Stewart airport and escorted all the way back here by the military, state police, Patriot riders, fire truck and many others. People lined the streets to pay their respects, flags and signs were everywhere. I knew him from substituting in the local school district and my daughters knew him from school, having graduated before and after him. A sweet boy who wanted to help everyone and only ever wanted to serve his country since he was little. Couldnt wait till he could enlist. A life cut short for a young soldier. It seems surreal when we watch these things on the news but when it hits home, it hits hard. Regardless of how you feel about war, thank a soldier for their service. It may be the last thing they ever hear. Fair winds and following seas Sgt.

I have a Del patterned Frizzle pullet. At least I'm fairly sure it's a pullet. Can be crossed with Silky roo. I do have Del pattern Frizzle hen but I don't keep silkies. to make Sizzles.

Nutty - the frzle pullet is in with the lot I offered you for the trade back.
And I do have lots of silkies so I could make sizzles.

How big is your brooder ? What temperature does your garage stay ?
Mine are always in my house at 1st ..yes the heat light does cause issues ..
Depending on how warm your garage is ? My cellar is 60 degrees .I turn off the heat lamp at night & cover them with a blanket or comforter .
the heat stays in & they all cuddle for warmth

Pharm.

Maybe you could put up a piece of plastic netting to keep them separate from each other. If you have a couple plastic stakes you could just zip tie it to the stakes making it easier when you need to move it.

Quote: How many chicks do you have? I use a 90 watt bulb instead of a heat lamp. Keep it low, about 3 inches above their heads. Some will say that its better to use a red light, but I've used normal incandescent bulbs for years. When chickens want to sleep, they close their eyes and sleep. It doesn't do anything to them having a light on all the time. I have the same fear of using a heat lamp, especially now that some of them are falling out of the holders. If you have too many chicks to fit under one, hang 2 up next to each other. I have 2 lights in each brooder, inn case one goes out, there is still another one for warmth.

When chicks pile up for warmth, the bottom ones usually get squished & suffocate. Sometimes when I stop using the lights, and there are young chicks in the pen, the first few nights, I sometimes find dead ones, that were suffocated due to piling up.

I'm going to go take a picture of what I've been using in the house this year that takes care of the "dander" issue and allows me to keep track of them better so they can stay inside longer than usual...and I don't have fire fears as much .....I'll be back...

We are just around the corner from Eastview...lol, small world! You should really try Hoover's Greenhouse on Baldwin...they are excellent. One of Mr. Hoover's daughters is our neighbor. The Hoover's have been so good to us...when my husband broke his leg, they were there to help with the kids until I could get somebody from our church. They sent over a care package, and helped us with planting our trees, etc. Good people.

We do go to Hoovers also...!! We love to shop around and see what everyone has..although we try to start most of our veggies from seeds, we do buy herbs, perennials etc. There is something addictive about a greenhouse full of plants.........almost as bad as baby chicks
