Evening all. Came home to some hungry brats as I forgot to latch the pop door open and it blew shut. I threw a few handfuls of feed in the run for them and filled the bowls inside for the monsters. Peace has been restored due to full crops. No broken eggs or eaten eggs today. Must be my threats of whacking to egg eater have finally gotten through. Must clean out that coop tomorrow. Nothing happening in the bator yet. Keeping my fingers crossed that my timing was off. I have decided that goat cheese is an acquired taste and my palate does not wish to acquire the taste. I tried it twice now but it has a musty taste to me. The girls will get the rest of it. At least I tried to like it. Have to get some more garden soil this weekend to put in my raised bed so I can get my plants in. Hoping for one decent day. Working all weekend though as well so trying to cram stuff in.

Have a good evening all.

One more thing on egg washing ....

I actually do not wash my eggs for a totally different reason ... with the bloom left on them, I think they keep longer ... I use eggs that have not been refrigerated for over a month and they are great. Ones that have been washed and refrigerated dry out faster. I really don't care or think much about bacteria because I am lucky I am healthy. I don't go snoot first in icky stuff, but I can't spend my time triple washing things before I do prep work ... I'm so behind on household anyway .... everything has been compromised by bacteria on it, in the air, hands touching it, we are so surrounded by them ... I like to let my good bacteria do the work for me.

I rotate and keep track - so I always sell the freshest eggs - that leaves me eating the older eggs in order to give the best quality to my customers ... so while I don't do it often, I sometimes am using very very old eggs ....

I'm with you. No egg washing here either. If it's that dirty I just toss it, they'll lay more :) The couple of people that buy eggs from me know they don't get washed and understand my reasoning. I've grabbed eggs from under a bird before just to fill a carton :)

Most of my chicks are "stand-offish" because I don't handle them much, but when I come into the coop to feed them, they are all over my feet...very food oriented. Besides, I have too many to pay much individual attention to any of them.  I do play with my goslings though...:love

They're very amusing. Getting a little braver every day. Tonight, one of them was brave enough to sleep on the perch near the nest boxes. The other two were still sleeping on the floor. I believe tomorrow night she'll be up on the roosts. The other two just kept looking up at her like, "what are you doing way over there?!" :D

I read somewhere that eggs can keep, unwashed, in a cool and dry place, for up to 7 months. I mean, I don't think I'd be eating a 7 month old egg...but still...

I have to say, rarely do my eggs come out of the chicken coop too terribly dirty. Occasionally, somebody forgets to use the box and drops an egg right into the sand...sometimes in a pile of chicken crap. But 99% of the eggs that come out of the nest boxes are poop-free. Most that gets on them is bits of nesting material.

Nevertheless, I do wash them thoroughly just before using them.

And I ALWAYS ALWAYS break one at a time in a bowl before adding them to whatever I'm cooking. I was taught that years ago in Home Ec.

They had not had a roost yet.

Yes, I posted on the Sloansville swap!  I'm not too concerned about finding a home for them, but would rather not be completely overrun with chicks!  I'm looking at replacing some of my hens and was intending on growing out 20 or so chicks, and putting the boys in the freezer.
I'm kinda doing the same thing except for my kids 4 h projects. I'm trying to rotate the right birds in and sell or freez the wrong ones. I have 53 birds right now  but decided our over the winter cap is 30. I also just put 14 chicken eggs in the bator. And tomorrow I'm doing ducks. Everyone can keep 3-4 birds for each project. I have a hen sitting on eggs but a friend of mine wants 7 baby's. I'm thinking about giving her the EE chicks that hatch and switching my other baby's. They are a little over a week at hatch day. Do you think that would work?? I'm kinda new at all this lol

So much happening lately! Started to write about it and started to realize that I was writing a novel. So lets see if I can sum up what is happening without writing that novel...

So I'm pretty sure that my little Peepers is a broody girl. She about took my hand off this morning. She has been sitting good since yesterday so I'm not sure, but I'm going to guess that she is going to stay. I have given her 3 of her eggs and a LF eggs. She got off for a while today while another hen laid her egg in the box. When I came back out the new egg had broken. soft shell. My question is this. Is it okay that the other eggs that I want her to try to hatch has got dry egg on them? Will they still be okay? I know that I can't wash them now so what should I do. I really want her to try to hatch those eggs.

I may have a second broody. I guess I should watch what I wish for right. She just sat tight this afternoon after she laid her egg. Not sure what she is going to do. All I know is that she is sitting on an egg and a golf ball and when I went to take the egg she almost took a chunk out of my hand. Man that hurt.

I have 2 problems with having broody girls. First is the lack of extra nest boxes. I have 2 main boxes and a 3rd smaller box that just my frizzle is laying in. Peepers is in the top box and Rosita is in the bottom. I think that I'm going to try to move Peepers soon. She is near the bottom of the pecking order and I don't want anyone to bother her too much. I'm not sure what Rosita is doing I guess I'll find out after a while. She is at the top of the pecking order so things should get interesting. The second problem that I have is how to tell DH that I'm letting the broody girls have a few eggs. I think that if the BCM is going to stay broody then I'll let her have 2-3 eggs. Maybe giver her Peppers LF egg and let Peepers concentrate on her 3 eggs. I just know that DH won't be too happy. Oh well can't count my chicks before they hatch.

This weekend is going to be moving day. Silkies are moving into their special area in the big run. I may add in the little cochins with them too. Was going to kick the big girls ducks out with the boys and put the babies in their run, but I think that I may wait a few more weeks till the babies are a little more feathered. That way the big girls can have a safe area a little while longer. The boys just go nuts on them.

Sorry for the novel. Exciting times her at the moment.
