NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Dreary day but we need the rain. Everyone is out in their runs looking for worms. Might have to bring in the 3 little monsters who are being picked on by the brats. Its only these 3 boys that are constantly being harrassed by the older boys. The other alternative is to put the older boys in with the terrorists. Those girls would put them in their place quick enough! Sigh. If only they were big enough to can. That would solve a lot of problems!

Study of Bacteria count in washed eggs verses unwashed eggs
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21673176

Ok that was a lot of apples and oranges. I never say "Don't wash eggs". I said don't wash them until just before you use them. That they store longer with the bloom on them. And never wash hatching eggs. They are going to lay around for 21 days at 100 degrees....that is just a prescription for germ growth, if it penetrates the shell before hatching. (I sometimes wonder if some of our "quitters" are due to bacteria getting through the shell)

Eggs sometimes get ickies on them from other hatching eggs .I would take a paper towel & wipe it off ...if it is wet .
Wear Gloves - broodys can be lethal....or pick her up quickly by pressing on her wings to move her ...they usually dont react right away to that .
Funny TT only pecks me if I have gloves on ...

Ask DH how many eggs to give the broody ? As a trial Run - 1st broodys dont always complete their mission

It hatched from a stored egg ...I didnt wash them ..stored them in the Frig for about a month ..Waiting for a TT to go broody & hatch her own eggs .
I am secretly hoping for Roo so she has a Mate ...As she is alone .
The chick is so cute. It looks like a little racoon with the mask.

By the time that I realized that the egg had broke the other eggs were dry so nothing wet to wipe off.

I thought that once an egg was in the fridge that it couldn't be hatched.

Went out this morning and my BCM is still sitting on her egg and golf ball. She didn't even come out when I opened everything up. Just sat there. She had scootched over so that one of the little cochin chicks could hid in there too. So I gave her another egg and took the golf ball. That is it for the eggs. Total of 3 d'Uccle eggs and 3 LF mixed eggs. When I get home this afternoon I'm going to set up a few more boxes and move them so that they are safe. Lets hope that all goes well. I really don't need 6 chicks, but I figure that not all of them will hatch. I'll be happy with one or two for my first time. Watch now all 6 will hatch.

Morning Everyone.
Yucky day here. Hope it clears up but like Pharm said we really do need the rain. But not for the next three days :-(.... So I've decided to take the plunge and look into getting NPIP certified. Main reason being because I'd like to really concentrate on these silkies/sizzles. And in order to to do that I need to hatch, weed out what I don't want, hatch some more, etc. Since there really isn't a lot of interest for silkies/sizzles up here my best bet would be to offer extras to out of state people who are already working with the breed. I've been following a post on FB regarding the subject and whether or not you have to be NPIP in order to ship and it turns out you do have to be it's just that a lot of Post Offices don't pay attention to it. If you get caught and you aren't certified there is a hefty fine. So I'd just rather not take that risk. I'm not going to do it however until I have birds I need to rehome. Right now I have 2 dozen sizzle eggs in the bator, I'm not expecting ALL of them to hatch but whatever does hatch I will grow out over Summer and thru Fall and decide what to part with from there on. I can't count my chickens before they hatch tho so for now it's just a waiting game. ;-)

Good News: We don't have to move!!!!!! DH isn't too happy and I feel bad but I'm glad we don't have uproot the kids again-yet. More changes going on and more moving of people around at his job so his boss is no longer in charge of Troy and therefore won't be sending him there.

Some say it is best to move broodies at night--well all moves work better at night, but also to bring some of her old nest with her. I think that some of their comfort is in a familiar place, so expecting them to adjust to every thing new and clean in a different place...is expecting a lot of a hen. They are animals and have a good sense of scent...hope it goes well.

I am not minding a little dampness today. The seeds I have planted will appreciate it too. Eunice, my high flying gotta be free girl helped, and kept me company while I planted carrots yesterday.

sounds like we are both in over our heads lol.... im thinking (hoping) that whatever we don't need I can sell at the swap. last Sunday was my first time there. is it usually on Sundays? if so that's probably why we have never made it :/ my hubby is a worship drummer in our church and im a youth leader. so its rare we have a Sunday off. with so many baby's growing up ill have to figure something out.....

I'm not really going to move them, more like turn them for now. I use egg crates for nest boxes. I'm thinking that for now that what I'm going to do is turn the ones that the girls are in 90 degrees and then add 2 more in front so that they are basicly in the same places but add a few more nest boxes very similar to what they have now and hope that the rest of the girls go in the new boxes. If not then I'll have to figure out something else. Maybe build a new small broody coop!

I probably have some, won't be around until nextweek. PM me if she is interested. Mostly Marans.

Right now I am SICK of these Marans. Lord have mercy and good garden o' peas! Nearly ever darn one is broody. I'm putting together more nest boxes so each has her own. What good is that when it's peak laying season and they're all wanting to hatch babies, I don't need right now ? AND I've got and EE and BR that are broody.

I have to make more nest buckets because they're on top of each other. If I don't give them their own nest and a couple of eggs they'll crush the eggs. Pulling them out doesn't help. Taking the eggs doesn't help, cuz they just get on the days eggs and keep going.
