NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: How long has she been sitting on that lst egg? I ask, because it will hatch before any other eggs you put in,, and the hen will get off her next to take care of the 1st chick & leave any unhatched eggs. That is why its best to put all the eggs in the nest at the same time. 1 day won't matter but more than that and you risk her leaving the unhatched eggs that still need more time to go.

I added to my hen's nest day by day because I didn't have any eggs set aside to give her. They hatched one by one Friday thru Monday and she didn't get off the nest until there were no eggs left.

I've only got 3 hen hatchings under my belt but I found that all three times, it was a matter of 3 days and they got up and was on their way. Once there was an egg left and I was incubating in the house so I stuck it in with them and it hatched. So, I think those hens know a thing or two about a thing or two for survival. That doesn't mean that it's always that way, just when I think I know a thing about.........

I have chicks hatching today if anyone needs em. Also have older hens free to a good home (meaning not for dinner). Wilton/Saratoga area. =)

And I still have too many gosh durn broodies!! :)

I hear you about broodies! My big girls are going broody. Thelma has been a couple of days now. I think she is too heavy for the eggs as I found a crushed one under her. Candled again and I think I misjudged when they are supposed to hatch. Eggs are nice and full of chicks. Maybe this weekend.

As much as a Broody moves you could turn it against the wall . Some days my broodys dont leave the nest at all .
When they do they screech like a bansheee....Like something is attacking them .

Frig Eggs - you want to hatch
Dont wash , Bring to room temperature slowly ( like leave it on the counter for the day )
Put under obliging Hen

There is always that chance ...Broody Hens are so unpredictable..
My hen TT tucks the chicks back under her for a while ...before she starts the feeding lessons

Right now I am SICK of these Marans. Lord have mercy and good garden o' peas! Nearly ever darn one is broody. I'm putting together more nest boxes so each has her own. What good is that when it's peak laying season and they're all wanting to hatch babies, I don't need right now ? AND I've got and EE and BR that are broody.

I have to make more nest buckets because they're on top of each other. If I don't give them their own nest and a couple of eggs they'll crush the eggs. Pulling them out doesn't help. Taking the eggs doesn't help, cuz they just get on the days eggs and keep going.

Rancher, do you separate out each chicken when they actually have the chicks? I have a whole coop of broodies, but since one had chicks first I separated her out into a cat carrier for her safety.. Hard to tell when I have eight first time broodies in a coop who will be nice and who won't!
