NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh...here is the latest on my coop
wee.gif

It still needs to get painted and a roof but they are mostly done with it. They sent me pictures today. It is supposed to be 8x6 on the outside but its not tall enough to stand up in (which that may be a pain in the Ar$$ later but we shall see.)

VERY nice coop. I can assure you that not being able to stand up in it will be a pain in the bottom....neighbor has a nice tractor and HATES to clean it....says her face is to close to the dust, feathers and poop dust when she is cleaning it....and she can't stand up in it (and she's a shorty). I LOOOOVE that I can stand up in mine, but it is tooooo tall...7 foot to the rafters. If I had to do it all again (and I might...insert evil laughter here) I would make it about 6 inches over my own height. It would make it easy to reach up an grab the birds off their roosting spot but high enough that their tail feathers wouldn't touch my head when I walked about.

On my insanely intense search for a frizzled chicken, I was looking at every city posted on Craigslist in NY. I know at one time or another someone was looking for Buff Orpingtons an I found some at Friendship, NY, I did find sizzled/frizzles that looked exactly like mine in Atlanta, NY and I found someone looking for a home for a very pretty Buff Orpington roo because he is so mean to hens and small children. How crazy is that. Anyway my search for a frizzled anything continues. I don't want a blue one. I drove to Michigan for an Australian Shephard posted with pics only to get there and it was a Border Collie, not the same dog posted or in the pic but brought it home due to abuse by the owners.

After caring for the dog for 3 yrs, he got hit by a car. :-(
oh my Sally, I bought my boarder collie because he was suppose to have been a pure breed Australian Shepard. Inbreed ball of fur had my heart when we layed eyes on each other. Then the lady jacked the price up after I gave her a deposit. Love the heck out that two hundred dollar mute even if does wake me up at 5:30 in the morning. If you still looking for bc with strong herding instance google Flat Creek boarder collies they took in 20 plus dogs rescued from them this winter. Hope the driver stopped when he hit him, don't know what hurts worse loosing companion or callousness of driver not stopping.

Pharm if you want go to the show tomorrow I can grab a wheelchair wheel you around (then I wouldn't have to do laundry -)

I'm hatching frizzles i got from tab. It seems like they normally have a frizzle floating around some where. I bought a barred frizzle from during the chicken stock.

Depending on how my hatch goes i may have some for sale. I would need to wait and see how many actually turn out to be frizzles.

She is my only Mille and the BEST little momma I could ask for ! My black mottled roo is the daddy. She hatched 3 yellows and one black/blue ( it's hard to tell what color thru the baby fuzz ! )

Good Luck with your hatch. I hope all 24 hatch for you

I LOVE my bantam cochins, they are the sweetest birds I have........................................problem is they come in too many colors !!

Are you going to the poultry show on Sunday @ the Fairgrounds ??

I agree. They come in way to many colors. I've cut down to just Buff Barred and Mille Fleur in bantam and Lemon Blue LF. I am hoping to get back into mottles though soon. I have frizzles in my Milles and will have them in Buff Barred soon.

What fairgrounds is the show at? I probly won't be there but if you go let me know how the cochins look there. Lol. I might a have a slight addiction.

I love my coop, but if I could have DH do it over again I would force him to make it tall enough for me to stand up in it. I HATE that I can't stand up all the way in it. I end up standing bent over and I really hate it. I told him that I wanted it taller so I could stand up in it, but he thought that it would be fine. I should have told him then if he doesn't make it taller that he would have to keep it clean. I'm sure that I would have gotten it 7ft tall then.

Rancher - I don't really know you BUT...You and your DW are in my thoughts.
I think you must do what you think is best for you and your situation but I agree that with everyone here that it may be good for you mental health to maintain your hobby even if at a smaller scale. Best wishes and hugs...

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts, and I do believe you might be right and that is my plan.

Right now we're just taking it one day at a time.

The show is at the NY State Fair Grounds in Syracuse.

I really like the mottleds, before I lost my roo , I was trying to produce Blue mottleds. The 2 chicks I did get out of him, turned out to be black mottleds............... so all is not lost. I just have to keep plugging along !

Such cute baby pix! Baby goats, fawns, chicks...

Gramma, the early spring pictures I got were on email, I don't know how to get them to BYC. Our giant retaining wall and landscaping project may wind up today. I sure hope so. Then grass seed, and plantings for windy location, must research that. I better get going, my excavator may show up any time. 7:15. I'm barely caffeinated at that hour.

To share the pic with us download the pic to your computer ...then when you click to upload a pic look for it in your downloaded file

I have a question for all of you with broody experience ....

I know the others sneak in and lay in her box - that's fine - I marked the eggs I'm giving her a chance on .... but I don't want to disturb her .... so I took out the extra eggs this morning while she was running around sucking up food for the day .... that means some snuck in in the late afternoon and the eggs were under her all night ..... are they safe to sell ???

I know I can eat them .... I am not squimish - but ironically - I don't eat many eggs ..... but I don't want to sell an egg with a chance at a tiny knot of cells and gross them out.

One night ??? I am perfectly ready to feed the eggs back to them, but don't want to loose sales if things are ok ....

I did check often - but didn't lift her up - only checked when she hopped off to get a refuel.
