NY chicken lover!!!!

ok wasnt trying to step on any toes so to speak i have a huge red tail hawk behind my house but she doesnt bother my birds so i just put in my opinion

you may want to try a few of those plastic crows ya see or even a crow call..when i first got my chickens i used to scrare the crows away till i relised they are chasing the hawks away ..now the crows are welcome here..lol

i have a covered run and once the hawks see its covered and theres no way out if he does get in , they move on ..but crows are your best bet in my opinion..

Crows are good to keep around. We had a mob of crows living around here a couple of years ago. Not a hawk in sight when they were here. Now I have hawks looking all the time and only an occasional crow. My runs are all covered so no worries there. Freeranging is a tossup but so far my silkie boys have always gotten the girls and themselves to safety whenever they see or hear a hawk around. The youngsters are just learning this and are paying attention to the terrorists when the girls sound off.

Unpacked and put my silkie eggs in the bator. Despite the po best efforts, all eggs arrived in perfect condition with all aircells intact. Heres hoping for the best now that they are in!

I agree -- we have a group of crows (how many crows does it take to qualify as a murder of crows, I wonder?) I really have come to depend on to let me know about "happenings" around the property. They are my aerial watch dogs!

Added some Belgian Cuckoo Malines to our flock. Will get better pics as I can -- these aren't the best. Also have four lovely little BCM pullets from Marquisella that are doing great -- ready to start integrating them into the main flock soon.

Thank you!

If worked for Fred a feral cat that would come to the house to eat. I got him into the cellar and then caught him with a fish net and caged him up. We took him and got him fixed but he never did get friendly so I just let him go and continued to put his food on the back porch steps.

Sadly we moved and were never able to catch him to bring him to the new house.

I love having the crows around here. I used to hate having them they were so noisey, but I have learned to love having them. We very rarely have any hawks around, but when they do come it is only a matter of moments till the "guys" come darting in and chase the hawk away. It is almost funny. When we see a hawk flying around, I always seem to say "Where are they guys, Come on Crows" and with in seconds the come in to the rescue! We also have a large amount of Bluejays. Not sure if they help with the hawks, but since they have all been around the number of Hawks we have around overhead has gone from a few a week pre chickens to around one a month post chickens.

Someone mentioned on here a while back that they're experience with chicks was that hens feathers grew in a lot faster than Roos? Or maybe vice versa? Out of my 3 LF Cochin chicks I have 1 frizzle who's feathers are growing so fast and the other two are almost half as feathered as this one. Could it be a hen?

I keep forgetting...

Congrats Pyxis for getting your post on the home page about your hoop coop!!!

How cool is that.

I made DH read it so he knew what I wanted to build next!
