NY chicken lover!!!!

Hopefully there will soon be an avalanche of chick pics on this thread. PLEASE ?
Are these bantams ? I think I see feather feet ..
we seem to be a 1 chick hatching operation ...our broody seems to hatch just one each time .
Well at least we are not swimming in chicks ...LOL

They are bredas: 6 of them hatched & I couldn't be happier. Broodies, yeah. I'm liking the incubator option. I had 3 hens who were broody off and on from Jan thru late April then they all stopped. Now they all try to cram into the same nest box at the same time to lay their egg & leave. They have several nest box options but I guess there's always a favorite.

Day 14 on my eggs. Checked this afternoon and the temp had dropped a lot - my fan seized up! Heating a towel in the dryer to lay over the eggs then hubby and I will try to either unstick the LG fan or replace with the computer fan he made. Only one week to go. At least these are my own eggs, so no real $ loss but still disappointing if I lose them all.

Ugh, how frustrating. Hopefully the fix goes quick and all the chicks hatch.

Nice morning here! I expanded the brooder and the peeps are loving life. Practicing their flying now that they have more room. After giving them the new space and fighting over watermelon, they are off to nap so I'll be working more on the coop.
Will I ever be done? Or will this be the never ending project?

Welcome to 'chicken math'.......it never stops

Happy, sunny weekend to all - glorious weather!

My girls have been getting some free-range time most every day that they enjoy. I figure it's good for them and makes their eggs healthier for us! They are getting spoiled though and WANT OUT more than I can allow with our busy schedule. So glad I have a decent pen. The smaller pen is still a benefit for Gertrude, my picked on and bullied Brabanter. I am really considering rehoming her, but feel sad to have to consider it at all. She has no neck feathers, but is finally starting to grow her cute POOF back on her head. Poor girl...they won't leave her be, so I cannot integrate.

Lynzi, I love the little house for the littles! That's what I called the younger birds to my original flock of 4 last year...the Littles! Yours are truly very little indeed!

Rancher - best wishes to your DW as she continues along her journey of healing and recovery. My best friend, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago and had a double mastectomy, just had her reconstructive surgery last week. She is doing FANTASTIC. Stay positive!
Good luck to all with hatches. Hope they're a success!

Back to the outdoors to get some yard work accomplished.

Best to everyone!

Well I just took a ride out to Caz to try and get some of that Poulin Grain from the store Marq said sold it and they closed! :-( I know it was there last time I shopped at that Tops. I was hoping to get a bag of that and the feather fixer since I can't find it anywhere around here. I refuse to pay $7.99 for a 8lb bag at TS because I know I got a 40 or 50lb bag last year for $17 or $18 at my local hardware store.

That stinks! Luckily I have a Poulin dealer just down the road. I have never noticed feather fixer before but he special orders stuff all the time.
I dug up some of my purple lilacs today and threw them by the road for sale. I could probably spare 20 or so. I never knew how difficult they were to dig up though!

Lyzi--I like that setup you have for the littles. Where did you get the coop and fencing? I need something like that for my silkie chicks.

Work was okay. At least the open bag of idiots was a small one. Doing a little sitdown before going out to clean the brats coop. My cat needed some tlc as well. She gets lonesome when I am at work. Treat time was early today.

Ok---guess I have to move again. Be back later.

The one on the left is from CCONLY.com and the one on the right is from Hayneedle.com only I dismantled it and took the run off. The netting is from Premier but that little "fence" if that's what you are referring to that the chicks are in, that is from Petsmart. It's a "playard" for rabbits and small animals.

Thx for sharing that video, Gramma... So glad it had a happy ending and that the woman could free that little fawn who had gotten himself (or herself) into a tough situation! Good folks! I have heard that disturbing sound first hand when we found a fawn that the horses ran over accidentally a few years ago. Sadly, it had a shattered hip and couldn't be saved. We try to check the pasture as best we can now before letting the horses out at this time of year. Farm equipment and lawn mowers are another huge danger to these little guys that are only 4-5 lbs. at birth and are nearly invisible in the hay fields. I've seen 5 fawns this past week alone, one of which was dead after having been run over by haying equipment.

Instinct tells them to stay put, and the very young ones especially will not move even to the point of being run over by loud machinery.

Here's a little cutie that was hunkered down in the field next to my house this week. Ridiculously tiny -- unbelievably cute! Hope this precious little one has a happy ending, too. Those eyes just kill me!
