Wow, you actually did this all by yourself?!? Can I bring you my extra roosters from now on?? I'll pay ya to do mine! LOL I don't have the stomach for it. My dog rolled in something horrid this week and I was almost throwing up while giving him a bath.

Yes I was a big girl and did all by myself this morning. I guess that that you could bring me them. I do need the practice, but before I do, I really do need to get a sharer knife. I'm sure that it would be an easier first step if I didn't know the rooster to start with!

I actually placed an ad on CL a while back looking for someone to process extra roosters and not a single reply was ever made. I don't have extra Roos right now that I just wanna get rid of quickly but when I do it'd be nice to have someone close by who could get the job done for me ;-)

I may be parting with my Splash Silkie roo if anyone is interested. I hate this because I paid good money for him but he is mean. How do sell a mean roo?!? I've tried holding him by his feet, he doesn't go after me but runs to the fence when the kids walk up to it or anywhere near it. I don't know if it's their size that doesn't intimidate him? Where as I'm bigger than them so he is afraid of me? He is a very good protector of his girls when I did have in the run with everyone. If anyone messes with them he kind of walks around with his head up high and all alert like "you better not hurt her!" LOL

DW says my EE rooster came at her. He never bothers me but must see her as a threat. I don't think my Maran rooster has bothered anyone.

My Dels of course are easy as pie. I stuck three young birds in there and no problems. Two of which are roosters.

Where did you get him? Perhaps they will make a trade for a nicer rooster.

Keeping the run clean..
My run for the girls is not as big as I would, this year... Next I will expand..

Im a clean freak.. Cant stand ordors of anykind.. this is partly why I sold off my muscovies. Love the breed, but that musky ordor that have and thier defensive pooping they do.I was always covered, do to always having a million babies running around.. Keeping the homestead clean was impossible..

off track as usual..
I clean the hen house weekly, if not more.
The run gets a good scraping down at least once a week agian if not more if they made a real mess with their food, if it rained etc.
The run is heavily shaded doesnt get a lot of sun so I worry about left over food particles getting moldy etc..
Am I too much of a freak? lol
Should I add hay?
Other than that, girls are growing well..
The itty bitties are now out with the bigger girls everyone is happy.

What I do is to add more wood shavings or hay or straw. Right now in the dry weather I dig and clean out some of the broken down stuff and dump it in my compost pile. You can help the breakdown by adding Peat moss, topsoil and gravel. I do have some hens with balls of muck on their toes and that's why I suggest gravel or stone.

I also toss in greens and insoluble grit. Scratch of course before I let them out in the am or in the evening so they have to scratch and dig. Keeping things dry will keep the smell away.

You could of course use a spade to turn it up yourself before they get to it.

These are all suggestions of course and with everything I've read one size idea does not fit all. Different strokes for different folks.

There was a bale of hay in this run before they had a field day tearing it apart.

He came from Adoravachick in Cobleskill. I could always ask but I hate to bother someone with that type of thing. Plus I drove an hour out to get the three from her and I just really can't be making those types of trips this summer with all I have going on right now.

I don't think that one rooster makes me a professional or anything and if you had a closer look you'd see that I didn't go that great of a job, but if you need my help, you know where I live!

I have gotten a few rubber eggs lately, but today I went to the coop to pick up eggs and Mama, one of my originals was looking at Stewie who was in one of the nest boxes. Then I looked on the floor, and there was an egg, no shell, no rubber coating membrane, just the yolk and clear . She has been acting a little slow lately. Does this signal that things are becoming difficult for her?

Hello everyone! I follow this thread but don't post much. I'm having a issue with getting rid of my cockeral chicks. My only 2 buff Orpington turned out to be both male! They are gorgeous.
Anyhow, I posted them on the bst thread, craigslist, and notices up at my local farm stores. I've even stopped at a few farms when I've seen people outside and ask if they want them, lol.

Anyone have anymore suggestions for me?
They are 5 1/2 to 6 weeks old now.
