NY chicken lover!!!!

He came from Adoravachick in Cobleskill. I could always ask but I hate to bother someone with that type of thing. Plus I drove an hour out to get the three from her and I just really can't be making those types of trips this summer with all I have going on right now.
Oh I understand the driving thing with gas prices being what they are. Of course if it was me I'd have no problem taking back a mean bird. You got them as chicks?

SAH, knew the maran she was getting was a meany. His days were short lived no matter what. He was certainly big enough to go on the table.

I have seen a recipe for Silkie soup but it was major gross.

Even grosser than Silkies themselves.

Too bad there isn't a Space shuttle you could hitch him a ride back to where ever it is they come from .

I have done it, but for some reason, its hard for me to "swallow" the chickens I've processed. There is someone in Canastota that does it as a business. I think I saw it on Craigs list. I went there a couple of years ago. If you have any Amish families around, or can ask at one of their businesses, there are alot of them that process. One near me only charges $1.50 for a chicken. Hardly worth it for me to do it myself for that...time consuming and the "ick" factor..
I once went to [email protected]. Cost me $2.50 per bird.

I don't usually have or keep roos for processing and it's cheaper for me to just give them away. The gas to drive to Constantia and back just doesn't make it worth the drive.

$1.50 might be. Heritage breeds or pure breds take more time to grow out, than cornish X. The freezer is full of veggies and fruit or store bought meat so there's no room anyhow. We usually just eat the breast.

No, the trio I got from her were all about a year old. He was fine when he got here because he was the roo getting picked on by other Roos at her place. Once he came here and realized he was in charge, his whole attitude changed. He's been kept seperate from the others for about a month now because I'm using my sizzle roo with the silkies. I paid good money for the trio and that's why is wanna sell him not butcher him or just give him away for free.

I have gotten a few rubber eggs lately, but today I went to the coop to pick up eggs and Mama, one of my originals was looking at Stewie who was in one of the nest boxes. Then I looked on the floor, and there was an egg, no shell, no rubber coating membrane, just the yolk and clear . She has been acting a little slow lately. Does this signal that things are becoming difficult for her?
If you are getting this type of egg from more than one hen, it could mean not enough calcium. I get crooked shells when I over do bread. They don't get it as much as when I first started with chickens.

If you think this is the case you might want to toss some into their feed. Because I repack my feed to jugs I sometimes toss some oyster shell into each. Just a little but as a precaution.

It could mean problems like worms or some other thing.

I buy those packets of Probiotic or Electrolytes that TSC sells so I can add it easily to my gallon waterers. Easy to use. I keep them in the fridge.

Hello everyone! I follow this thread but don't post much. I'm having a issue with getting rid of my cockeral chicks. My only 2 buff Orpington turned out to be both male! They are gorgeous.
Anyhow, I posted them on the bst thread, craigslist, and notices up at my local farm stores. I've even stopped at a few farms when I've seen people outside and ask if they want them, lol.

Anyone have anymore suggestions for me?
They are 5 1/2 to 6 weeks old now.

Unfortunately there are very many folks keeping chickens. Too, most are NOT breeders and those that are keep closed flocks. You're not likely to get anyone to pay for them. I just give my extra roos away. Too some folks won't take them unless they're table ready.

I have one friend who culls right away. If you can find someone to do them for you then that might be the route to go.

I have seen a posting on craigs for "unwanted " animals but I'm not optimistic that they're a decent place to go.

So it's likely your only options are 1. grow them out and eat them yourself. B. Find someone to cull them as is. III. Find someone to take them for free. D. Take them to an auction but don't expect to get much. ( I find it's not worth the gas it takes to get them there.)

FYI everyone. A friend of DW's gave her a copy of an SPCA mag that has an article on chickens. I've not read it yet but will get back and give you a blurb about what it says. I carry a bag of magazines to read while waiting at DW's appointments.

I haven't courage enough to take my crochet yet.

Believe me I sympathize with you 100%. I've got a CR chick that looks to be a $55 pullet. I'd not feel so bad if she were a he, cuz I roo is what I needed. The seller got ticked at me so it's not likely I'll be getting more eggs, even at that price.

Then again they are late bloomers so there might be hope she's a he, but I don't think so. She isn't a nice bird, color wise. Too much black.

Then there was the time I paid $40 for a pair of Brown Leghorn bantams and he was a pill. They didn't lay well and he crowed like no tomorrow. They're gone too.

Then there are the Marans and Swedish flower hens. Crooked toes and just a mess. $180 for those. Didn't tell DW what I paid for those.

I did get some nice birds for just the shipping though so my experiences haven't been all bad.

I know this is the NY page :)

I live right on the NY / PA border and my husband works at Tractor Supply in Warren, PA. I have conditional permission from the store manager there to hold a chicken swap the weekend of 9/27/14.

In order to hold this however we need at least 12 confirmed participants. Mif you are interested, send me a PM.

Thanks

I am looking to give them away for free. I am new to chickens and don't think I could eat them. I thought about it today and got this look from the head honcho.

Evening all. I went and picked two flats of strawberries this morning then made jam out of one flat. Cleaned and washed the other flat and stuck them in the freezer. The best part was that I opened the door and tossed all the leavings off the kitchen porch and voila! all gone! The cleanup detail (aka the terrorists) left not one hull or anything else. Like it never happened. Anyways, made dh a nice strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped topping tonight. Judging by the cleanliness of his plate when he was done, I would say it was good. Cheeps were happy out all day today. It was a beautiful day today.

Luv--nice job on your roo. Sharp knives and practice will have you expert in no time.

Adreaner--you might have to do the deed if you cant find those guys homes.

Rancher is right about buying birds. Its a crap shoot and you could end up with good birds and not so good birds. I have had a few, bad and good. Getting better at this though.

Long day at work tomorrow. Try not to be too chatty while Im gone!
