NY chicken lover!!!!

I have spent some chunks of today working for the broodies. They are not appreciative of my efforts. The two eggs that I passed from one to the other did nothing in the warm bowl of water, so I threw them out. Set up the dog crate, and put a tarp over it. All that was fine with the girls, but when I took their nest boxes out of the little coop and put them in the crate, the complaints began. Speckles settled down under the coop with her chick in her feathers. She didn't like being put in the crate, nor did Gabby. And no one liked that I moved Honey in the bottom of her cat carrier into the coveted coop. Honey has three eggs I will examine tomorrow, with gloves on. And I must fence off an area for them. And make strawberry Jam!

Happy birthday, Chris! Your new chickens are beautiful!

We have got these nasty wild roses everywhere.  I once cut some up and toss them in a raised bed and they started to grow.  :th  I never did that again.

I can't use Round up cuz I'm afraid the chickens will get poisoned. I'll just have to keep at them.

The Buckthorns I have no idea but to just keep cutting and cutting and cutting.  I can't understand why anyone would want them. They're not pretty and not of any use whatsoever.

IMO hard fill should be outlawed.  I even have a private dump in the back that I figure the old owners made. Our house was built in '59. I'd need a dozer to level the whole lot.

I checked with DH on the roses. Before budget cuts he was the cooperative extension field crop educator for cattaraugus county. He said the only way to kill multi-flora rose is to burn it or use round up. He also said round up is safe to use around chickens. That stuff is the bane of every farmer trying to clear a pasture.

Morning all! Another beautiful day. I mowed the lawn yesterday and didnt die so thats a good thing. The hills almost killed me and my knees are mad but thats what drugs are for. On a happy note, the two chicks that hatched out are doing well. The one is quite the loudmouth. The look so tiny next to the older silkie chicks! So some of my budding einsteins in the coop next to the terrorists wandered into the terrorists run last evening. Panic ensued when we couldnt figure out how to get out. Finally, after some serious pacing and bawking, all but one roo figured out how to get out. When dh went out at dusk to lock up, the lone roo was so grateful to see him that he went up to him and begged him to pick him up and put him back with his own flock. Silly boy. I had though that the girls would have chased the interlopers out of their run but they ignored them. Louise, being low hen on the totem pole in that coop, made it her mission to bully the brats/monsters all evening. When she wasnt harrassing them, she was stalking the silkie chicks in their playpen. I guess she needed to feel better about herself.

Chris---you have to post pics of my grandchicks when they hatch! Yes, your girl is a fierce broody. Just like her momma but I dont put up with being nasty. Her momma has learned not to peck me and that I can touch whatever I want.

Rancher--the bator was in a room that I always use as there is no traffic or drafts. I have a brinsea and the same one you have. This happened with both bators. I am done for the year anyways. I may have to change my hatch times to a different month. We shall see.

Off to Sacandaga today to visit family. Enjoy the day everyone!

Yes, there were so many lies about Roundup - how long it persists, how you should apply it

I will NEVER use Roundup ..... they are also good at "teaching" people how great it is - so most think this way.

I would figure that vinegar and whatever posted earlier - cut up the bush you see - spray that on the open cut and that should do it.

I don't have such trouble with them - I mow them over when they are less than 2 years of growth and mow earlier in the year before any flowers/seeds .... when I got my pasture I had a few clumps - now only a clump or two shows up each year - from other places no doubt - but I mow them and they never get big enough to rip up my jeans or spread.

Roundup bad,,,,, very very BAD - it doesn't dissipate as claimed and has been show to be the long term culprit of trees dying in the near vacinity of its use ... so if you have shade trees that keep your home cool in the summer anywhere near ... don't use it.

Sorry to come out so strongly against other advice. I just did some research and found the falsified documents and the attempt to suppress ... FYI - I am not an organic nut :) so that is not my motivation here.

Pharm, I was actually going to message you last night. Junior is great. Hopefully a couple of his babies hatch tomorrow

The little girl on the other hand is broody

I think she's only laid a dozen eggs or so. I almost think she's going to be just as nasty as Hilda, crazy thing tried to take my hand off last night.

County, I'll make sure to let you know. I need to practice my AI skills a bit more. I don't want to trim them and they have some super fluffy butts

I'm like a kid in a toy store when we go down there. Jamie has great birds and he's an awesome guy to talk to. I definitely recommend him.
I have blue mottled splits hatching now from a splash roo from Jamie and a couple of my black mottled and I'll have more hatching over the next couple weeks. This is the last batch until the blue mottled start laying.

Rancher, we have a walk behind weed whacker. 21" cut, it's so much easier than swinging a hand held one around.
I was going to get some blue mottled's from last year but I never made to get them. I can only imagine being there. I bet I would be a lot like you if I went there.

These are just single petaled and once blooming whites. Not worth dealing with. I've need a bazillion gallons of round up to wipe these babies out.

I've also got some Red roses that look to be ground cover type too. They are pretty but also only bloom once.

I'm more into David Austin cut type roses.
