NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi so sorry about the birds.
You had me laughing about the bait you would use about the only thing missing to attract them might be a little bit a garbage bag. Raccoons are so terrible

Does anyone on here have laying hens or close to laying hens for sale? I can't keep up with the eggs I need and it has gotten to the point that I may have to buy some eggs to make brownies this week.

So I've been up since 4am, couldn't sleep, too much on my mind. I have a coffee, read on my phone a little and decide to head outside to let everyone out since I've been sleeping in as of late and no one gets out until 9 or so. I head up to the coops/rabbit hutches and hear nothing but flies buzzing around. Tons and tons of flies and can't help but wonder why there are so many. I'm looking all over the ground and notice what seems to be a little black bird or what was left of it anyway, the wings, some feathers. And now I'm still tired, staring at it thinking what on earth would be able to kill a bird up here?!? We have no cats roaming around...and it's like at that very moment I looked up, glanced over to the hutch that ALL my chicks and 1 duckling were in and they were gone! All gone besides the 1 duckling which was lying there dead in the cage and one little black chick, I think it was my smooth sizzle half alive. My 2 frizzled sizzles - gone, 5 Orps - gone, 1 silkie - gone! All gone! Blood and guts all over the ground, I'm still in shock. This freakin raccoon just had his last meal. Tonight I'm sitting out there with the pellet gun DH just bought and taking that sucker down! I am sooooo PO'ed. What really makes no sense to me is if those chicks were getting attacked by this raccoon, why on earth did they come to the front of the cage?!? The whole 3 other sides of the cage are boarded. This thing stuck his paws in there and managed to grab each one out piece by piece! So ticked. Still in shock and just so ticked. DH woke up shortly after and went up there to help me clean everything up before the kids woke up. Just so upset.

I am so sorry for your loss. I've just posted about poop in the yard and wondered if its' a coon. I've young ones not normally in the coop and also wonder if coons hear their peeping. Chicks under broodies don't seem to peep so much.

I do lock them in the coop and have christmas lights strung around and in the run.

My one and only coon attack yielded four. I think mostly due to the panic. Chickens panic and go crazy. Only one was attacked and the coon was working on her, but the others were smushed trying to escape.

I suspect they all died in the panic and that's how it got them all. I think I may put a radio in the coop, if I can find a cheap one.

Again I am sorry for you loss. If there is anything I can do, send me a pm.

You don't need to use it for anything? I was just thinking after I posted that-Great another thing I'm going to spend money on and then we'll end up moving and then what will I do with it!?! Lol

Well now you don't know where you're going and you'll want chickens and may need it. Who knows better days may be coming and sunnier skies.

Chin up,

Rancher

Me either. I regret the hens I did let go.

I panicked with all that is going on, but I do have someone who will buy my eggs. I've got chicks plenty and only one pullet who won't lay I suspect for another month.

Of the broodies two have gone back to laying. I've not introduced them back to a flock they seem to like their solitude or single cell mate.

Unfortunately I don't have the electrical part of this fencing. And that fencing is way down on the side of the yard and used for the silkies and the few larger chicks I have. These were in a rabbit hutch up in the back of my yard with the rabbits, Orps and ducks. I didn't know where else to put them in this heat. They were getting too messy to be in the brooder inside the house. If I moved that to the shed they probably would have died from the heat. So I thought the next best thing was a secured hutch. Just boggles my mind that if they were getting attacked from the front of the hutch, why didn't they huddle in the back of it out of this things reach!?! Then again, DH said he was probably scaring them to death by going under the hutch to get them to move to the front and that's when he would grab them. I just don't get it. All that money spent on those eggs, all that waiting for them to hatch, I finally have a great hatch with my Orps and then this. Unbelievable.

It is Horrible ! Poor Babies ! I am so sorry ...
How do you know it was a Coon ?
this one of my greatest fears with chickens ...Air conditioning on ...Cant hear anything .
Animals that are afraid dont act normal or rational ..might even run toward a Predator or they may have flocked together & got caught that way

Lynzii- So sorry for your lost littles. Perhaps with the heat they were all staying near the wire front where it was cooler and since chickens cannot see in the dark, they were too scared to move away.

I have little chick that is failing to thrive. Seems to have chronic diarrhea, but it is only just this one chick. The others are all healthy, running around, eating, drinking and growing like weeds. The sickly one stays puffed up under the heat lamp, peeping constantly and almost always standing. Did see it pecking at food this morning. It isn't pasted over the vent, more runs all down it's backside and belly. Have washed it off a couple times and applied A&D ointment, almost like 'diaper' rash. I feed medicated chick starter, but will double check the bag tonight to make sure. I also give them the Manna-Pro Life-Lytes in water for half the day, other half the day is plain water. Everyone else is fine and growing, sickly one is becoming the runt.

Did you try Egg yolk or yougurt, apple cider vinegar in the water ?

I used to feel sad when I saw a fox or raccoon or possum that had been run over, but I have shocked myself lately by having the first thought oh that one won't kill any chickens. I may be getting to be a mean old lady!

I suppose I might feel bad if I thought they provided some useful purpose and I'm sure they do, just not any I'm aware of.
