NY chicken lover!!!!

I found a place called Roo Haven Farm in Forestville... just wrote on their FB page to see if they have any day-old chicks.
So sad that our Meyer order ended like this. :(
sorry to hear this ..it seems the later in the season they tend to have more trouble shipping ..i would offer you one of my new birds but they are much to big for your little one .they are 14 weeks old now...good luck and i hope you can find what your looking for ..please post any info you get about the forestville roo haven farms ..i may need to take a ride out there ..

Leah - so sorry !

You did everything right getting ready for them - so don't put this on your shoulders ! get just a few local peeps to get you going if they don't have the breeds you want ...and then get more in the spring.

It really is so rewarding to raise up a batch of peeps.

Speaking of that - my miracle rooster now has his first generation ... and I have a young roo that looks just like him .... sigh. Going to be really hard to cull him. Seems Colo is throwing mostly roos, and this one looks exactly like him. Which - because he is not like a buff orph .... is unusual - he is a mix of EE and Welsummer - so I expected that him being pappa with a mix of hens would never give me one that looked exactly like him! Go figure.

Anyone want a roo from a VERY hardy line? And his momma laid well well into her 5th year, and was the sweetest hen I've ever known. She passed her sweetness on to her son, and so I hope all of this generation.

I did call Meyer and they are going to replace the four chicks. Our little survivor died last night. They said it doesn't usually happen.. so they are sorry & will send more out on Monday. I'm going to sterilize the brooder just to make sure there isn't any sort of disease they were carrying. Hopefully the next batch will be healthy. I hope you find a good home for your roo!

lakewood here ..i really had no idea there were so many locals on here ..its great to see the southern tier repressented..lol
And we're in West Ellicott (across the street from Busti in one direction and across the street from Lakewood in the other, haha). Meyer is going to send a replacement batch of chicks, but if these don't make it we'll source locally. I am glad there are local chicken owners!

Howdy folks, I'm planning on going to the poultry swap in Bath this September, does anyone have comments on it? I'm hoping to pick up a few guineas.

Welcome to the party.

Where in CNY are you? My neighbor has Guineas, though I don't know if he's hatched chicks.

hi i am want to now about your chickens how much u have and how much u want for tham

Craigslist response. Would you answer it?
I would answer ..do you have anything to trade ?
The person is either a bad texter or a bad spellerk

I posted an ad for Barter, not sell.

I do have a lone chick too. Poor thing nearly died. Put it with Suzy Sussex but she has so many chicks it just didn't keep up and got cold. She has 10 chicks I think and Bonnie Blue has 9. Bonnies are much to older so she couldn't take it and I've no where to stick another broody hen.
So whats the rest of the story ? LOL
So what did you do with it ? how old is it ? what breed is it ? My hen has a one week old chick

That is good to know. We're losing our little girl (the survivor). Something is wrong with these chicks. She was walking yesterday and cannot walk at all now. Silently peeping. Will call Meyer in the morning. :( If we can't get replacements, then we'll get some local. So very sad.

You need to watch videos of hatchies. Some only buy eggs and get them shipped. No telling how old or what the line is. There is not barn with different breeds that they breed themselves. Hardiness is not in the equation for them.

Don't blame yourself. The stress of shipping has done more than one chick in. Even the stress of being carried home can do it. Chicks are very fragile.

Well I didn't answer the ad. I'm afraid of a virus.

The chick is in a brooder with a light and I've been giving it bits of sugar water. It's up and around and pooped at least once. There are other chicks but older in the room that make noise so it's not too alone.

It's a Birchen Marans. I'll have to keep checking on it and giving it some attention. There are other hens on eggs and if any chicks hatch in the next few days I'll pull one to put in with it, or move it to a broody hen. I just have no place to separate them from the older birds.

My Sussex and an EE were willing to take new chicks not to much younger but the Sussex has 10 so she's probably past her prime of keep chicks warm. The EE is the same.

I haven't let them out because the older birds will get into the coop. They're both in the half hoops.

Most of those hatched are EE's. If I could have left it with the mother I would have but I think the Marans rooster is not nice and killed the last two in that coop. I want the Marans but EE's not so much.

I just feel sick about losing all of them. Meyer is sending the replacements on Monday, but if this batch doesn't make it we are going to try to source locally. I am having a hard time finding local chicks, but it looks like there are a few options in our area (and local chicken owners in Falconer and Lakewood).

I have sav-a-chick and probiotics, heat at the right level, etc. Checked our survivor for pasty butt, but she only pooped once and her vent was clean. She was very wobbly and whatever did the others in, got her, too. We tried our best, but it was too much for the poor baby.

I'm very anxious about the ones arriving on Tuesday.
