NY chicken lover!!!!

We had the buff silkies the two small red head kids are my monsters.

I'm sorry now we didn't catch up to each other.

We're moving back to Chautauqua County for 4H next year. Maybe we'll see each other at the meetings.

And before I thought your two did a very good job yesterday. It was a VERY long show. I'm going to have to make sure my MIL is with me next year to help occupy my son.

Here's my take on pasty butt. I think it happens when the chick touches the shavings/ground with its butt while pooping. So some of it sticks to the butt. Then the next time it touches it again and then it has a build up of poop stuck and eventually blocks up its bottom. I believe that is the problem because people have a hundred reasons that they think causes it but it still happens in every situation. That us also why I think some adult chickens seem to have funky butts. If you watch than you will see that they squat too close or even touch the ground while pooping do some gets on those feathers. . As the feathers get more build up of poop it becomes a huge mess. Most chickens have feathered butts but most don't get poop build up cause they don't squat so low. Give me a chicken that shoots poop out without squatting!!!!

Thanks. Just a heads up. Show chicks along with your kid and have them enter into the open class with the fair. We knew nothing about showing and 4-h didnt explain much it seemed. But my daughters teacher for next year explained stuff to me. She has people who cant watch their birds so she takes care of them (not 4-h birds). She said all it costs is like $1.50 to enter the bird and then you get in all week. If you dont do that 4-h will sell you a week pass for $21.00. From what she said the fair judge wanted some of the 4-h birds entered but they wasnt. Wish we would have knowen he could have done both compitions.

Well now I never noticed, but this one chick I've got was on paper towels for the first few days and still is not that I think of it. I just got new shavings and haven't put them on any. There's only the two.

Pasty butt is smaller and skinnier. I've cleaned her (

) butt a couple of times. Too she was put in with the Sussex hen who didn't bother with her really but then Pasty didn't keep up with the others either.

I normally keep brooded chicks on medicated feed but not these.

You have a point since I clean her but the poop isn't necessarily stuck at her vent. Still she doesn't seem to be thriving like her cell mate. Both are Marans.

Speaking of which how are yours? I've been in contact with some one selling Birchen eggs but can't afford them right now.

DD has been showing birds for 3 years =).
We will definitely do the open class next year too.
If you want some extra help, I'd be more than willing to share. I was working on showmanship with the kids in the other county.

All the chicks that I hatched from them ended up getting copper so I quit. I still have them. Roo is in the stag pen and hen is in with black coppers since she throws copper anyhow.

n I said some of it sticks to their butt I meant the poop not the shavings. The poop sticks cause it doesn't all clear the body. THey "dunk" the butt in the poop so some poop dries on it.
