It's so hard to wake up every morning and not anything to go outside to. After we get moved and settled and the kids are all set for school, registered, physicals done, etc, I can see myself devoting the rest of my summer to getting my birds down there. Even if they do end up being down the road, it's better than not having them down there at all. I wonder if I'd be able to "rent/lease" a piece of a farm's land close by. I often see ads on CL for people looking for land to lease for hunting or housing their animals on, I wonder how successful they are in finding someone who will lease to them. Maybe I'll try editing my ad that way.

Sorry couldnt make it Sat ...I had my niece come from Michigan to visit her Mom ...She brought her 2 daughters & son & granddaughter to visit .
Have a safe trip up there ...Sorry I couldnt send you off .
I agree renting the land for your animals is probably safer than letting some one else take are of them ..

Luvs - I was thinking just put a tarp over the tractor

Hey guys, I moved out of my mother In laws house, we are on a farm now and have no internet. Everyone is doing good, today the landlords dog brought a live and unharmed turkey hatchling.

Welcome Back ..We missed you ! It Cant hurt to try ! chickens raise ducks ...why not turkeys ?

We have been seeing wild turkey s running around everywhere where we live ...with little babies in tow .So cute !

Need advice on pine shavings.... What is the best way to clean the brooder of their little droppings? Should I just clean them all out and add new ?

You can, or you can just keep adding new shavings and do the "deep litter method". They'll stir it all up and mix it around so it gets "refreshed". Once it starts piling up you can clean it out and add new and start all over again. I guess it depends on how often you wanna go thru a bag of shavings. I cleaned my shavings out more often because they tend to get damp quicker and dampness leads to mites....bleh!

I use the deep litter method - so I stir up the old stuff and just put new shavings over the top of them ... maybe clean it out once a year. Then I just shovel into wheelbarrow and dump around plants and put on new stuff.

This was the 3 LF broody box ... humph. So far 6 peeps .... !!! So hard to fuss with the remaining 3 eggs that are now a day late .....

I keep my chicks in a clear plastic bin from Walmart. (they're the only ones carry the large size I like). I have more than one, so for now I keep the unused ones ready with shavings and make the switch. I dump the dirty one and clean it out for future use.

Now if I have to move chicks to clean I just put them in a cardboard box with a little shavings in the bottom, clean the brooder and put them back.

Surprisingly my wooden coop was dry most of the summer so I just cleaned it. I toss DE all around inside the coop corner and wet spots. I also do the same in the nest boxes. Those I might change more often.

Runs of course can be loaded up with cleanings, new shavings, straw or hay. Raking always helps to keep things dry.

Your talking a chick brooder right? I put down paper towels for the first few days then after that I put down a layer of paper towels then cover it with shavings. I use a large plastic tub, so as they are scratching around the bottom is always covered so it won't be slippery. Then every few day's I clean it out. I like the paper towels under the shavings because then I don't need to add so much shavings at first. I get the cheapest roll that I can find. May only use the one roll the whole time that they are in the house. Now that they are getting bigger I can add more shavings and may not need the paper towels. I keep mine in the back room so I don't like to let it get to dirty or when DH gets home for the week he'll complain about the smell. You heard Happy Wife = Happy Life...in this house it is Happy Husband = Wife gets to keep her chickens!

This summer has been so busy! I don't get on as much as I used to. I bought some school supplies for the older 2 girls this past week, even though I'm waiting for a letter from the school with teachers and supply list for my oldest. The kindergarten handed out a list at the prescreening. My coworker asked if I could believe Christmas was only 4 months away this week too. Time flies!

Gramma- My first hatch birds started laying this past week. They are the same age as the birds you got from me, so keep a look out for eggs!
