NY chicken lover!!!!

Right, I'm sure it's a lot but I've read some cases where the people were making almost enough but just needed an extra boost in order to keep it. That's what I was thinking, some people are looking for others to come in and farm, raise livestock, etc with their land so they can keep that tax exemption. So if say 1 other person is going to use their land for farming crops, maybe they'd rent to me cheap in order to help them keep that status. Another couple got in touch with me last night but they are 30 mins away. However they have 30 acres and nothing on it. All they have is 2 dogs. The woman has a horse that she even boards elsewhere. Maybe I could help her care for it if she got over to her property.

Ahhh...hmm...To get tax exempt status as a farm you have to do what she said.....to have the tax status of "Farm" for property tax reasons, you just have to be actively farming it. Chickens count

Right, but I guess in some states, depending on how many acres you have you have to bring in a certain amount of money with your farming, no? Maybe I was reading it wrong.

Ahh...oh, Lynzi, I forgot you moved.....That is how it is in NY state....CT might be different....But here in NY your land can be taxed at lower farm rates if someone (not necessarily you) is actively farming it regardless of how much money is or isn't made during the land use. To become tax exempt for sales tax purposes in NY you have to actually make money using that farm land. Two totally separate tax issues.

All you birders out there:

Have you ever seen a Blue Heron sitting in a tree? I have a Great Blue Heron sitting in a bent over tree out back looking at the pond; probably looking for frogs for breakfast. Silliest thing I have seen a long while.

Never seen a blue Heron in a tree...... we have a couple of green Herons and they love to sit in the trees, they merge into the leaves well. I would think your heron is a juvenile and hasn't quite got the hang of things yet!

Last night when I went to close up the coop and auxiliary coops, the two oldest of the juveniles were not in their dog crate. I looked all over for them, but didn't see any signs of them. This morning I went out early, and one of those chicks appeared out of nowhere. Then the other one started rustling the leaves of the pussy willow tree. They had spent the night in that tree. Silly birds.

Fiona had been on a tear yesterday, Earl even intervened a couple of times as she mounted and pecked Butter relentlessly. If she is like that today, she will be put in solitary. And on my list to learn about processing...
