NY chicken lover!!!!

I would like to use dog bowl but I don't think it will work I have the 5 gallon waterer so I USA fish tank heater but on cold nights the drinking part freezes

I use heated dog bowls every year - even outside, they don't freeze. When it was minus 25, I got a ring of ice around the outside, but the water was still unfrozen.

I have to chip out bottom of mine I think dog bowl is to small

Sooo.......think I'm losing my marbles! I felt sure I had checked the 'Tomcat' bait stations a couple of weeks ago. Apparently not - not only were they empty, but a mouse had made a nest in there!!

Mental note - check more frequently..........

i have a dog bowl ..its a blue one .looks like it is about 1 gal maybe bigger.. ..i've never used it but plan to this yr ..hualing water out ever few hrs is just crazy ..i aint doing that again ..and with 22 birds i hope it stays alot warmer in there..i actully have a few cookie tin heaters i use under the other waters..they work ok ..i am always worried about fire tho ..light bulbs burn in a tin can get pretty warm and with all that straw out there its even worth..i try and keep the litter to the nesting and perching areas and out of the feeder areas..but they are chickens and you cant get them to listen to reason..

Have to ask. what are they?

Waterers? I have two five gallon buckets with nipples and heaters, but I still lug hot water each winter morning in milk jugs. Filling the same gallon waterers used all year.

The chickens prefer bigger drinks and I don't think they get enough with the nipples, but that's just my OP.

'Tomcats' are mouse/rat bait stations - it's enclosed so that the hens/cats/dogs don't get the poison. They are small enough to fit into a coop or run. I have one in each. It certainly seems to keep the vermin down - when you remember to fill it!

Little Beak A Poo wants to be a mommy!

There were 2 eggs in each nesting box and she picked one and covered up the eggs with the sawdust.

Now she doesn't want to move!

She looks so cozy in there. We put a pan of water just outside of the nesting box for her. She has a couple of her own eggs and a couple eggs from the sizzle Chicken Nugget.

One of Buckwheats eggs hatched. I'm not sure about the other one. I tossed three EE eggs last evening cuz one burst and boy did it stink.

I was ready to toss Buckwheats two eggs but heard a peep and moved the hen to a clean nest box and stuck the two eggs under her.

I'm telling you this in case you find yourself in the same situation. I'll take the chick to the brooder and hope the second egg hatches. If not in a couple of days I'll toss it.

That's it for brooding eggs. There is a hen in the Marans coop trying to broody but I keep moving her to the roost each night.

Read my beak, no new chicks!

hahahaha! Tossed 3 EE eggs? Awwww. But they're so pretty! TY for the word of advice, we'll BOLO for stinky eggs! Congrats on Buckwheat's new hatchling!

I have the exact same problem. I use a heater attached to the bottom of my waterer and the ring where the water is always freezes...drives me nuts. I have to figure out something different for this year. I'm thinking the dog bowls but I don't see how they can be big enough without having to refill them constantly during the day.

This is a screen shot of someone else's screen shot that they just shared on FB. This looks like a great waterer for winter but I notice it says "temporarily out of stock online" :-(
