NY chicken lover!!!!

I thought it would be a lot easier to find some extra silkie hens in the fall, thinking everyone would be downsizing or parting with some adults to make room for chicks they've grown out. So hard to find what I'm looking for in CT. Seems as though the only birds people are parting with are roosters because they can't have them. I'll be heading up to the Cobleskill show tomorrow, hopefully I can find what I'm looking for. Although I have a feeling I'll come home with something I don't need rather than what I went there in search of.

Don't count those silky roosters out. I use foster roosters for started chicks. Silkys are great dads and warm to sleep with. I put them together after the chicks have their wing feathers and don't need constant brooding.

Morning all. Been a while since I have been on. Life has been busy. I have been working some crazy, all over the place hours at work. My mother finally got her house sold and moved to GA. She and my youngest found an apt to share. Labor day weekend was the two year anniversary of my fathers passing.

On the chicken front, my silkie juveniles are looking great and I am still not sure how many boys I have. I do have at least one who is the son of Little Man and will be as big as his father but has the lighter coloring of his momma. He is a keeper. He is also a very sweet boy. Legolas thinks he owns the whole yard now that Little Man is gone. Thank goodness my rir roos are laid back because Legolas marches through their flock with his women and nobody makes waves. Little Mans son will be giving Legolas competition I think. They have sparred a little but the youngster doesnt have his confidence up yet. He is much bigger though.

I believe I finally have a winner with this one.

Meet The Duke. He is the winner of the culling process in my quest for a decent Heritage RIR rooster. He is 5 months old and is pretty good type for the breed. In the top pick you can see his brother, Rooster Cogburn, with his head down eating in the front. Not as good but backup just in case. I am a huge John Wayne fan, hence the names. The Duke has a wonderful, laidback personality. I will put him with my 3 best heritage pullets for spring chicks.

I have to finish culling nonlayers and Clyde out of the big coop. While Clydes leg seems better he still spends a lot of time laying down and has trouble mating and defending the flock. The Duke is going to be my breeder so Clyde must go.

I made homemade chicken soup and canned it the other day. Saved some for dinner and boy was it good. I am proud to say I got to eat my own tomatoes as well. A first for me as I generally kill any plant I try to grow. Already rethinking my garden for next year. Have to add on.

I hope all is well with everyone. I will try to be on more often again now although our busy season in retail is upon us.

Have a good day everyone!

Well now I don't know. Guinea Pigs? They can get pretty big. Mine share the yard with a ground hog and have shared it with rabbits.

Most of the "glow in the dark" fish that you find in most pet shops are ones that have been injected with dye so they are colorful and bright, but as time goes by the dye goes way and they are plain looking fish...Just what my sister said when she worked in the fish department of a pet store.

Teacup pigs or Micromini pigs are just that when they are born..Then they grow up and end up to be 100-200lbs. They don't stay little for long!

Morning all. Hate getting up in the dark now. I have to wait to let the cheeps out till almost 7. Dawn and dusk are prime predator times so I dont like to open up the doors until its light. Dh got pics on his game cam a couple weeks ago of a bear, a coyote, a fischer and a coon checking out the chicken carcasses he disposed of way back in the woods. The bear and coyote didnt touch them but the fischer did. It was a big one too. The funny part was all the turkey vultures that were on camera. Almost 200 pics of them! Silly birds. I will say they did a superb job of cleaning up. You would have been hardpressed to find even a feather. A win win for all concerned.

I have done some reading on those tea cup pigs. They dont stay small and they do eat and get big. Small may be cute but breeding an animal to be very small is going to lead to issues. Organs dont always follow body size so you have issues with small bodies and normal size organs. Same goes for breeding for large sizes. Science has proven that extremes on both ends of the spectrum leads to many health issues and life expectancy drops. I wonder how long Paris Hiltons 38000 dog is going to live?

Fall is here and soon I will be raking and bagging leaves and pineneedles for winter runs. My mother gave us her snowblower so I figure that now that we have one, we wont get any snow! Saving feed bags to put up as wind breaks on the silkie runs. If nothing else, it makes me feel better!

Rancher--how is dw these days? How goes your downsizing?

Off to the pharm today after the laundromat. My new washer is being delivered on thursday, thank goodness. Its costing me a small fortune to go to the laundromat.

Have a good day everyone!
