NY chicken lover!!!!

Most of the "glow in the dark" fish that you find in most pet shops are ones that have been injected with dye so they are colorful and bright, but as time goes by the dye goes way and they are plain looking fish...Just what my sister said when she worked in the fish department of a pet store. Teacup pigs or Micromini pigs are just that when they are born..Then they grow up and end up to be 100-200lbs. They don't stay little for long! http://www.scampp.com/TeacupPigs.html
There actually are some breeds of pig that stay relatively small - not teacup small like a chihuahua which breeders will trick you into thinking, but some only get to the size of, say, a cocker spaniel. Juliana pigs are one example of this. They've just been selectively bred to be small :)

Howdy Everyone!
Went up to the Cobleskill fairgrounds yesterday for the poultry show and after saying I was only going to find that one bird I was looking for, I came home with 5. One is for a friend here but still. I'm happy though. I got some really nice splash silkies from Danielle (Adoravachick on here although she doesn't come on here that often anymore) along with a blue cockerel. I decided this morning that I'm going to build a run rather than use the poultry netting. I just don't see that holding up well in the winter. And this guy I'm renting the land from has all sorts of wood on his property and even a saw mill so he cuts down his own trees and then cuts his own wood. So I won't have to go out and spend money on wood OR chicken wire/hardwire because I already have some of that as well. So this run should cost me next to nothing to build. While I'm building that I might split it up into sections because now that I have all sorts of silkies and sizzles and work with, I'd like to separate them up into breeding pens placing my 5 Splash hens with my Blue cockerel, and then another pen for the Blue silkie hen and blue sizzle hen to go with the splash sizzle cockerel. And then who ever is left just place them in with who ever.

My sizzle eggs are due to hatch in 6 days. They're already wiggling around in there. I candled them today and I think I have one that gave up. It just looks weird and I didn't see too much movement in there. I'll have to try looking at it tomorrow. I don't have too many dark places to candle in this house. No closets that I can walk into, the basement is pretty dark, maybe I'll try that.

Hope everyone is well!!

The sheriff department was there. This all happened in one afternoon. That house has just become a haven of problems. Prior tenant now landlord was busted for a marijuana growing operation in the basement. Boskelli- the prior tenant/now landlord was trespassing not far from hubby's stand where a friend has a climbing stand 25' up. Never knew the friend was up there watching him. The thought crossed friend's mind or at least yelling at him, but the creep was carrying a gun during bow season. DEC officer has visited the farm a few times, but usually not much can be done.

Well now I can't say much from experience but I've read pigs are very smart and can be house trained. I once gave an oral report on hogs in high school. Not a good experience.

Learning about hogs...or the oral report?

I don't know to much about them either, but I like to look things up.

Morning all. Still dark out so I havent let the cheeps out yet. Clyde and The Duke are crowing anyways. Silly boys. I felt bad leaving yesterday as everyone had their faces up against the fences pleading for me to stay home so they could spend the day out freeranging. My silkie kids are getting better at going to bed when I tell them to. Legolas just runs to his coop with the girls following him when I tell him its bedtime. Silkies are so funny sometimes!

Fischers are pretty much everywhere but are elusive animals. They are a member of the weasel family and can do substantial damage if they get into a chicken coop. I know there has been some living down in the swamp beyond our house for years now. Generally we dont see them except for once in a blue moon. There is plenty of wild, natural food for them to hunt and eat around here so I havent been too worried about them. Lots of dogs around here to that keep the predators at bay. My neighbors basset hound Nellie patrols the neighborhood several times a day, including all around my chicken coops, and thats a bonus for me. The chickens dont mind her because she never bothers them, even when they are out freeranging. The only downside is that she was a hunting dog before my neighbors got her so she found and ate all the young rabbits that were in a nest by the shed. I was not happy about it but what could I do?

Rancher--how is everyone?

Lynzi--glad to see you have a place for your babies. Did you retrieve your silkies from Chris?

Off to the pharm again today. Everyone have a good day! I hope we get some rain.

Quote: thats the trouble .. nothing will be done till someone gets hurt ..and then its to late ..i no i have had it out with my neighbors in the passed ..i havent spoken to some of them in 10 yrs ..i like it this way tho ..they really have nothing to do better then to attack others about were the shed is on their property..my shed had been in the same place for 5 yrs until they moved in acrossed the street ..then they complained to the village and the village made me move it ..i wanted to put up a green house in my backyard and they went to the village and they told me i could build one but it had to be to their specs ..needless to say i have no greenhouse now ..but i have my birds and theres nothing they can do about them ..their lucky i didnt turn this place into a big old pig farm with a big mudpit in the front lawn ..lol

well be careful , you never no who these folks are and what they might do ..

Pharm - yes! I did retrieve them from Chris, the weekend of Sept 13th. So they've been down here for about 2 weeks now and I've already managed to add 5 more! lol But I sold 4 of the chicks to it kinda evens out.

Jamie's (the guy I'm renting land from) son wants some silkies and is excited I have eggs hatching coming up. Once they hatch I'm going to let them feather out for a week so I can at least tell by wing tips what they are-silkies, sizzles , etc. Give two to his son and sell the rest. Unless of course I get a color I don't already have. I need more blues at this point so if I get one I'll probably hang onto it for a while.

Here are most of my crew this morning:
