So I finally got around to setting up the heated waterer. If it works well the chickens & me will be delighted....it must hold about 2 gallons. The wind chill is 17F right now and going down. Winter is almost here!

Last year I just carried hot water each morning and/or broke the ice in the morning. Chickens back wash and using the black rubber tobs allowed them to have clean water each day. But that' s me.

We all have to work out a system that works for us.

Rancher, I went to my local bank first, they are really good, best bank I ever been with. They told me they would do it but with the new rules and regulations I would have better luck with a big mortgage co. getting a lower interest rate.

I'm sure they are, but my other accounts are with my local bank. I'm just of the opinion to keep as much of my money local as I can. I buy from local vendors if I can.

I have a local coffee shop that roasts their own beans, veggies and fruits at local farms/farmers, etc. etc. You get the idea.

Sorry if I added to the politics but when it comes to our Constitution and Bill Of Rights I can't help myself. To tell you the truth I think both sides are a bunch of crooks and liars, and those with the most money for negative ads usually wins. Did you watch the debate for Gov.? The front runners took turns calling each other corrupt liars, and both had proof! It seems like the argument is always "Well at least this one isn't as bad as the other one".
Can't really say who was worse when it came to our civil rights, Bush or Obama, but I do know who the ACLU, American Civil Liberties Union says is worse.
Actually I saw a thread on this site BYC on politics and the President, that was the thread on a chicken website. I had a big long comment and then I thought you know I thought it was nice not to have to do this anymore (I'm trying to give it up, I have thousands of posts on news websites, now I just don't read the news) , just talk chickens, so I erased it.

Maybe we can talk chicken politics?

Do you know some towns do not allow it's taxpaying residents to have chickens?
I don't know how many there are but there is a small town near me Walton, no chickens allowed.
It was in our local newspaper last summer the residents of a very small city, large town, Oneonta, were fighting their local Govt. to have back yard chickens, the board said NO! Yet in NYC, chickens are LEGAL, no roosters but the residents of one of the biggest cities in the world can raise chickens! ( don't try to buy a big soda though, the food Nazi will get ya! )

I usually buy local also, I get my dog food and chicken feed for about the same price as Tractor Supply at a local feed mill McDowell & Walker, used to have a Blue Seal also, actually went right to the mill there cheaper than anywhere, but they went out not enough farmers anymore.

I haven't tried it yet but the home brewing catalogs sell green coffee beans and roasters. And I watched some you tube videos, and read up on roasting beans with a air popcorn maker, works good. Nothing better than a good cup of joe!

Is anyone heating their coop tonight here in NYS? This is my first winter with chickens and I'm so afraid they'll be too cold!!! Water has a glaze of ice inside the coop tonight--I smacked it out and put fresh in.
I have a heat lamp set up, but have been virtually smacked by everyone on here when I think about turning it on!! I don't want to be a big suburban sissy in turning it on (these are the only outdoor animals I've ever owned in 37 years!!).

Supposed to get down to the teens tonight.

Sarah

Evening everyone!
Sounds like everyone is cold and/or buried in snow up there already! It got a dusting the other day but it's melted. Still freezing here. Suppose to get warmer this weekend tho I hear?

Henrietta, my Silkie/Polish cross hen has decided to go broody again right after she just started laying again! Ugh! I was finally up to 2 eggs a day and I'm already back down to 1. Wish someone would pick up the slack a bit. We're gonna have to buy eggs soon - Bleh! I wanted to get some egg layers to keep over winter but I have been reading a lot of nightmares people are having around here with their flocks as far as sicknesses go and it really freaked me out so I'm not bringing anything new in. I still don't know too many chicken people down here that well to trust them enough either. I feel like I live in a completely different "chicken world" down here compared to up there with you guys. It's just weird. But I guess with CT being so much smaller and everyone being closer together you hear more about these things like illness and predators than you do with people who are living more spread apart? Does that make sense? Lol

New pup is doing really well. Funny, he plays around with Charlie, our dachshund, and he entire mouth fits around Charlie's head! I weighed him last weekend and he's up 60lbs already. Is like to get him into a puppy training class but I've only found two places nearby and the class times don't really work unless I can get someone here every Saturday morning for 6+ wks for an hour or so to watch the kids while I take him. The other classes are in the evening during the week from like 6-7 or 5-6 and again, DH doesn't get home until 7 or 8 during the week. I gotta figure something out. Otherwise he's doing well learning basic commands. Right now we're working on keeping him out of the kitchen while the kids eat so he doesn't have three or four people telling him to get away while they eat.

I think I'll head to lowes tomorrow and see if I can find that plastic sheeting for my chicken run. I really need to make some kind of door for that dog house the silkies are in too. There was one on there but I had to take it off so I could attach the run to their house. The door wouldn't open with it attached. Why do I leave these things until the cold weather gets here!?!?! Ugh
