NY chicken lover!!!!

We had -14 this morning!
th
Anybody have colder?

It's so cold here the chickens are wearing Fox furs.

I'm beginning to see the wisdom of keeping larger animals to generate heat in a barn to keep things warm.

When it's cold out I like to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea.
Then I like to use the book as coaster for my tea,
and browse the internet on my laptop, while simultaneously texting my friends,
and flipping between channels on the television, uh what were we talking about?

What I had intending to say before was my idea to put up a cattle panel/covered with poultry wire in an arch and grow some type of vine over it so when winter came it would catch the snow and created a space clear of snow for you birds to find shelter. You can secure your panels with those Green metal stakes if you choose to raise them higher so you can walk under them. Add more each year to make a tunnel.

I tried to cut and paste pictured off Pinterest but the would not take.

You could use Trumpet vine, Hops, Grapes or an annual flowering vine such as Scarlet runner beans. Hops, grapes and Trumpet vine are woody and less likely to be destroyed by the chickens.

Trumpet vine would attract Humming birds too. These can be invasive but also come in Yellow.

Yeah - a couple days of confinement and she will first off be more humble with you - and second - she just lost her place as Grandma said ! So she comes in and they all give her the stink eye - if she ever regains the top - it will probably take 6 months to a year & then just remove her again !

Good luck - tell us how it works out .

Well now we had a bathroom that had the pipes run underneath a porch, it's hard to explain. Anyhow I covered them with insulation and because there was a light there I put in a 100 watt light and left it on 24/7. The heat was just enough to keep the room warm and the pipes from freezing.

If there is no light socket there you could run a hanging light such as a heat lamp to the area and put in a "ceramic heat bulb" to keep the area just above freezing. If you have not it might be a good idea to wrap all pipes with foam wrappers or another form of insulation.

I hung one over the water bowl in my back room where I have a quarantined hen and it keeps the water from freezing. Much safer I think than those 250 watt red lights.
i have a crawl space under the house were the pipes are ..and lets just say i have gotten a little girth to me in my aging ..lol and am not sure i fit under there anymore ..but you are right , i need to wrap them and maybe have a heattape wrapped around them or maybe one of those bulbs ..i dont no why they would build a house and put the toilit on an outside wall ..but i guess its pretty common in these small homes..the toilits the only thing froze this morning..i already fired up the hairdryer....it was almost noon before everything broke free yesterday ..

Well now you need to get someone under there to wrap them up or you'll have worse problems than frozen pipes. I took one of those work lights and hung it from a pipe in my crawl space just so I can see to check the pipes. I've had to fix the sink drain two or three times. It's PVC and came apart. What a mess.

I also took an army shovel and dug out some space so I could get in there.

Check during the day for any cracks or leaks where cold air can get in and seal them with that foam stuff. Turn off the light so you can see where they are. I recently had to do some more since they did not seal about the drain to the septic and grey well.

You also check for openings from the outside at night by putting a light on inside. Then fill in the cracks with the foam stuff.

Do not use a heater of any kind in that space. Do not use a "red incubator" light in there either. Those foam insulation tubes can be slid onto pipes easily. Even some bigger than the pipe are better than nothing.

Hello fellow New Yorkers! I'm from Pendleton. It's gr8 to see other people WNY

Great to see someone else from wny. I live in Wilson.

I can talk hubby into driving hours for poultry shows.  I don't think I can get him to agree to chickenstock though =(   I'll have to see what the details are.

I'm still working on a WNY one though.   Gonna contact TSC in Dunkirk AGAIN and see if I can actually connect with the manager - January is SLOW time for them.

That would be nice. You don't have to bring hubby. A friend and I go with our kids and leave hubbies at home. They wouldn't be caught dead. Lol

Wondering if any of you know of local sources for hatching eggs. I am in Saratoga. I haven't found anything but I also am new to this so I might be looking in the wrong places. I have been considering trying some from Papas Poultry or the Ameracaunas on the BST thread, but would rather go local if I could, at least while I get the hang of incubating

I love papa. Just got eggs from him for a swap and he included a 72 hr heat pack. They all made it safe despite the fact that it was 5°.

i think a few birds try to keep others from eating so thats why i have 2 diffrent places for them to eat and drink..i cant find any feed with more then 16 % protein ..anyone have any ideas were to find feed with higher protein ..i live in lakewood ..the tsc has feed but i dont see any with higher protein ..any help would be great ..

I get turkey pellets from reisdorfs they're like 22% plus they have animal protein. 100lb bag for $22. It's worth the drive. They are in north java.

I live about 1.5 hours away and my daughter goes to RPI about every other week.
I have Black Copper Marans, Brabanters, Blue cream and Gray Silkies, Light and Coronation Sussex. I'm getting some cream legbars but wont have any available until next fall or late summer.

I sell both day olds and eggs.

I would be interested in coronation, marans and silkies. My friend is looking for either a coronation or light Sussex roo.

Boskelli ... I see your challenge and raise you a cute picture ....

My set up is mostly free range ... so there is not really mud except a few days a year .... I do deep litter on the floor of the coop - so no mud inside coop for inside days.   Outside days I have so much land that I have grass and leaves except right in front of the coop - so that is only a step or two for Miss and Mr. Millie and they are inside  (note the roo below is not my breeder male - his waddles are not SOP).

I also have my millies with the big flock unless I separate to get hatching eggs ...my breeder pair gave me 2 hens and a roo last spring.  Peep pictures below.   Baby Roo went to a new home 3 weeks ago ... and he is king of the land - they love him and bring him inside to play

I raise Millie's as well but would love to get some new blood. Let me know if you have any chicks or eggs available.
