Speaking of feeding your chickens squash...I am highly allergic to wheat, barley and rye. Is there something I can grow or feed to buy that won't break the bank for my chickens that is healthy for me to be around???

Squash and pumpkins I can grow in abundance on a good year....sunflowers too.

I am new at this chicken thing. My chicks are only 5 months old as the oldest...

Thanks
My birds like cabbage. I hang it up during the winter to give them something to do. pretty cheap.. The squash and pumpkins are good for them to eat. I like to let a few zucchini grow really big and throw it into the run and watch them go nuts. Mine also like cucumbers...and of course the mother of all chicken crack....watermelon! cut one in half and let them be in heaven..So I guess what I mean is that anything that you grow in the garden they will probably eat....Mine like tomatoes too...Oh and corn on the cob. During the summer at the end of the meal I take all the cobs and give them a treat the next morning

I'm not exactly sure. There are books about making your own feed. There are mills that will mix your feed but may charge a bit more.
Do you eat chickens and eggs from the store?

If you're eating eggs and chicken from the store then I'd guess that you're eating chickens that have been fed wheat, barley and rye. Right?

I have a friend who can eat my eggs and not get sick but even Egglands Best make him sick.

But like I said you may be able to find books at your local library about chicken feeds and mixing your own. I checked out every book the library had and read as much as I could. I didn't read about mixing my own feed because I had no intention of doing so.

Okay thanks. Food for thought. I try and eat mostly vegetarian but I would eat a little grass fed beef and buffalo if I felt like it. I eat eggs from the local farmer that don't seem to bother me too much...or I just haven't paid enough attention to it. Unfortunately, my issues all have similar symptoms and are fairly new to me...so, it's hard to tell what I got contaminated by. But, I am learning every day.

Luv...Do you need to chop it up for them? At what age can they start eating garden scraps?

I cut the watermelon in half, but the rest I just toss it in the run and let them peck away at it. My chickens get stuff as soon as they are put outside, Once I put the out with the flock after they are fully feathered and big enough to defend them self then they get to have all the good stuff.

During the summer I also will rake up the cut grass and put it in big piles in the run. My run is actually just a large fenced in area with no top. My chickens and ducks get to free range almost everyday but the run doesn't have grass anymore so they love it when I put big mounds of cut grass in there for them to scratch around in during the times when they have to stay in.

Chicks hatched out by a hen ... well they go right into the mix at my place .... all I did was make sure I let the big ones out first to put some chick starter in there ... then an hour later I let them out and they mixed and at dirt, grass, bugs ... whatever with the adults ....

If they have access to rocks (grit) - they can anything right from the start.

Mine were terrified of watermelon! They thought it was some sort of invader or something ....they only went near it if I cut it into smallish pieces - crazy birds!

It takes that long?! **** I wanted to plant some nut trees. Maybe I will stick with fruit trees this year. They only take 3-5 yrs.

Some of Mine started eating garden scraps as soon as mama brought them out the coop. I had a broody hatch some a couple years ago day 3 she had them all out scratching in compost.

I want to plant some hazlenut or filbert trees. I read they grow quick. They are like a bush but can be trimed into a tree? Anyone have these?
