NY chicken lover!!!!

Ugh. Broke a good record. Haven't had a hawk kill a chicken since they were 6-weeks-old (they're 24-weeks now...).
A hawk ripped a 5" gash under the wing of my little Buff Orpington today. Poor thing. Found her wedged into a nesting box next to a hen trying to lay an egg. She's so meet and mild-mannered, I couldn't imagine why she was being so bold as to squeeze into an occupied nesting box.
When I pulled her out, it was obvious.
Here's what I did.
Brought her up to the house, filled our big farm sink, washed out the wound thoroughly, poured Hydrogen Peroxide on the wound, and lots of Neosporin.
Made her mash and water with electrolytes and put her in a comfy dog crate.

Does that sound reasonable?
She ate voraciously and drank well. Good signs, right? Not in shock?

Sounds good so far !

Keep her quiet, fed & watered. Likely you will have to keep her away from the others - they just can't resist picking at something like that. Wash the wound daily, soap & water will do, Neosporin as already done. Keep a close eye on the area for signs of infection - swelling, discharge, smell etc. if noted antibiotics will be in order. If she starts to pick at the wound, you may have to use Vet-wrap to keep her out of it. Lots of treats are essential of course!

Keep us posted - I always find it amazing just what chickens/creatures can survive...

If it starts to look infected, what kind of antibiotics do I use? I heard that Tractor Supply carries them? They are water soluble? What do I ask for?
I do have BlueKote already for when I do reintroduce her to the flock.
She's resting peacefully in a crate in our guest room.
I wonder how it will be keeping her in the warm house now vs. going out with the flock later in the coop that's not heated?

Sorry to hear you had a hawk attack ...glad she survived ...she sounds like she is doing good
Its best to keep her inside for a while till she heals ...Once she is healed it will be okay to put her back outside .
Hopefully it will be a little warmer when you need to .not a frigid day

You can get Ammoxillin from a vet or on ebay
For a 7 pound bird 250 mg twice a day - 7 days

Here is some advice I have saved
WOUND CARE
Saline for flushing wounds to clean them of debris. Can be applied with the large droppers you get in the infant section for dosing medication or with a large, needleless syringe. Saline can be purchased by the bottle at some pharmacies or as eyewash kits, though the eyewash kits are often more expensive and do already come with an ideal attachment for dispensing.
Vetericyn topical wound treatment labeled as safe for birds and safe for animals to lick. See the Vetericyn website and the drug label information for more information.
Neosporin topical first aid ointment for wound treatment. Can be used on eyes.
Honey - honey can be applied directly to infected wounds and covered. Honey has natural antibacterial and healing properties.
* Some have recommended Blu-Kote and use it without issue, however, the label states not to allow the animal to lick it and states that it is not for use on food producing animals. See here to read the label information. Also, it does produce blue staining.
Vet Wrap - this is a bandage that adheres to itself and is great for wrapping wounds. It is basically the same stuff as an Ace self-adhesive wrap bandage for humans but comes in a larger variety of sizes and colors and generally costs less.
Styptic powder use to stop bleeding in cases where direct pressure may not be a viable option. Flour can be used as a styptic powder or you can buy styptic powder at most pet stores (they carry it for nails cut too deeply). Kwik Stop styptic powder is labeled for use on birds.

Therapeutic grade oregano oil natural general purpose antibiotic for use on external bacterial infection. Does not create resistant bacterial strains like synthetic antibiotics do. Some reports indicate it can be used internally as an effective natural antibiotic, as well. Must be therapeutic grade.

Duramycin-10 (tetracycline hydrochloride) broad spectrum antibiotics for use in chickens and other livestock. See the drug label information for dosage and usage information. When antibiotic treatment is complete, feed plain yogurt or buttermilk to restore good gut flora.

I cant for the life of me figure out how to copy and paste a thread on here from my ipad!!

Aceschix is having her chickenstock may 3rd Saturday in NH...Imlive in NY and shes 4 hours from me..I can tell you when we had her chickenstock a few years back at her house it was packed, great prizes from the auctions and fabulous birds, chicks, and eggs for sale or raffle!!! I asked her to post the link here because I know a bunch of you would go;)

Now I saw someone looking for eggs??

I have olive egger eggs or olive colored egg as well.

Possible mixes are

CCL roo x golden cuckoo marans, black copper marans, splash marans.

OR the black copper marans roo is sneaking in some ation time and mating them as well so you could get some pure BCMs too...there is a bresse rooster with them but hes a hiding pansy and doesnt dare go near the girls...yet..

I will be bringing pure CCL chicks to Aprils chickstock if presold...25$ for a pair 20$ for each additional girl..rooster are 10$ I LOVE the possibilities with the roosters!!! I have a newbator that hatches beautifully!! Unlike last year where I lost everything multiple times due to a stupid faulty Brinsea!!

That was me looking for eggs but I want them for hatching now and besides won't be going to NH too far and I am hosting the Ny Chickenstock

I think Gramma got you covered. Duramycin is available from TSC. I found out the expensive way that antibiotics from the vet will cost you a lot - $50+. I'm not sure of the dosing tho'.....
I would think she's going to be inside with you for a while, so hopefully the temperature will be a bit better by then!

We got some snow overnight. Kids got a snow day. We are at about 8 inches now but the weather man said that there might be more snow coming so who know what they final total will be, expected around 12 or so. Went out to shovel the chicken run. I really need a small snow blower to do it. Maybe next year. They weren't happy that they had to stay cooped up this morning longer then normal, but they wouldn't have been very happy with all that snow. They have barley a third left of the run that I haven't piled with snow. Really need it to warm up. Glad that I still have a bunch of that wood chip stuff cause I have a feeling with all this snow it is going to be a wet spring.

Fredo and his girls have adjusted nicely. He is a big baby. The girls will come out right away in the morning to eat and drink, He takes a while before he remembers that he has to come out to eat and drink.

Stumbled across an idea when I was looking for something to use our old baby crib for. I was planning on turning it into a desk or something, but this is such a better idea!

I can so do this! Trying to decide if I should make it into a chick brooder, Breeding pair coop, or a rabbit hutch. My sister said that I can have her crib too. And with Drop side cribs illegal to sell for a baby, I'm sure that I can get some more real cheap or even for free! I so can see a small pigeon house...I can see a whole line of these in the yard...DH and I better get the old barn cleared, I'm going to need the space to set them all up along with my Turkey coop!!
Trying to be happy right now. Got some sad news that my husband favorite aunt passed this morning. I hate having to call him when he is out on the road. I try not to call with bad news if I can help it, but I wouldn't want to be told on Thursday that my aunt died on Monday. She lives just down the road and we love to pop in for a visit from time to time. Her husband grew up in our house. It was his family farm when it was built. We will miss her terribly!

Luvmychicks....Sorry about the loss in your family.

I just so happen to have a baby crib in my barn...Thanks for the idea! I don't know how well it would do outside in the elements...but, for an inside brooder or grow out area it would be okay! I just ordered a bunch of chicks on Greenfire so, I am going to have to get building very quickly!

I have her in the basement now where it's probably 55 degrees. I thought the 70 degree guest room was too warm (and smelly!).
I think after being outside for her whole life, 55 is probably toasty!! Have her in a Rubbermaid tote with food & electrolyte water. She ate and drank today but seems (understandably) sore. Poor girl! She's a good patient!
