NY chicken lover!!!!

A friend of mine that lives in Anchorage Alaska posted this weather forecast for them. I told her that she suck!

I am so totally over this winter weather. We went on a road trip today. We went out to Williamson today to buy a minivan. When we left home it wasn't snowing. The trip out wasn't to bad, but the way home went from bad to worse. By the time we got back close to home it was a whiteout in some areas. I'm glad that I know the roads pretty well so it wasn't so bad that I couldn't see past 5 feet in front of the car. It looked like our road hadn't been plowed all day. We had about 6 inches at that point and it is still coming down. The weather guy lied again. They said the last time I saw the news that we were to get 3"-6". I guess because of our "higher elevation" we are going to get more. That is usually the case... I have no idea where I'm going to put it come morning.

All the feathered kids were safe and sound in their houses. It is going to be a pain to shovel the run out tomorrow...On the good side the heated dog bowl worked like a charm! The snow was all around it and even taller then the bowl and the water was still liquid! I think that I may have to get a few more.

One of Hubby's friends has been in Southern California since mid-October. He is done with the job out there next week and gets to drive back to CNY. Boy is he in for a shock!

I was looking for 30's today...didn't happen. We hit bad roads too...drifted in with white outs! One guy was trying to back down a hill on route 80 because he couldn't make the drifts...scary.

The weatherman is always wrong. I have a good college friend who works for the emergency preparedness center down south and no one heeded the weather warnings...I told her because no one trusted the weatherman to give correct information.

Stay warm & safe all!

Did you guys see this about a week ago make the national news? Ithaca invited people to visit the Florida Keys!

They said its to cold here, the weather's for the birds! Come back when it warms up.

So are EEs just a generic chicken... Not Either Amer or Arac ?
An EE or Easter Egger is a term for the cross of an Ameraucana and any other breed. Many EE's look like an Americana and some hatcheries pass them off as such.

An Ameraucana has to be a specific color and look. An EE may or may not look like an Ameraucana but lay blue, blue green, green, pinkish or brown eggs. An Ameraucana lays blue eggs only.

Araucanas only lay blue eggs too. Ideally they should have both whiskers and beards. They have a lethal allele that makes hatching difficult.

EE's are hybrid crosses created to offset the lethal allele.

Holy snow! Can it just stop now?!

DH and I (and our 10yo) shoveled off our back decks today for 3-4 hours. They had 4ft of snow on them. We are all exhausted. There is another 4-5" on them again and its a white out. Argh! I love the snow. I think it's pretty but man I would like our decks to still be attached to the house in spring.

We have to come up with something else for next year.

How's everyone else holding up?
My SIL has been going out shoveling off roofs. Some commercial roofs too. He has a construction company. He did ours. The snow doesn't look heavy but it is. It melts from the heat and then settles making it look only so deep but the underpart is hard and heavy. Be careful.

I've heard about it, and heard the local ski centers are not happy. I pass Greek Peak everyday on my way to work, this is the best year they've had in a long time, although they did miss out on the thanksgiving and Christmas crowds. At least they aren't having to make snow anymore. If the weather wasn't so bitter cold, they would get more skiers, but there are diehards out there every day.

It sounds like you got more snow yesterday that we did. My brother & I went into town yesterday, as I had an overflow of eggs so I sold them to the local food co-op, plus got the rest of the supplies for making the coolerbator. I wanted to get more heated water bowls, but TSC was all out except for the heated 3 gallon buckets. All four of the breeding coops have ones for their water, but I need 3 more for their fermented feed, as it just keeps freezing. So, I have to bring in the rubber dishes at night to defrost, then take them back out in the morning. Hence, they're not going through the fermented feed as fast, but since they also have dry layer mash, they're going through that faster than normal. By 1pm when we came back yesterday, they snow was coming down & blowing all around. So even though I'd let the chickens out in the morning, they were all back in their coops, except for the ducks who always have to be escorted back in.

@LuvMyChicks1491 - I too looked up the weather in Alaska the other day and saw that they were warmer than we've been!

Here they're calling for a heat wave of 34*F today, but overnight getting down to -2*, only "warming up to 3* above zero on Monday and overnight low of -14* , with wind chills of -30*!

Last night when I was doing the fermented feed prep, the whole grain's rinse water wouldn't drain down the shower. Let it sit for awhile and didn't move. So, Dad graciously removed all the water little by little, and found it frozen solid at the bottom of the the drain. Blow drying didn't do anything, and the only access to under the house near that bathroom just happens to be where there's 3 - 4ft of heavy, packed snow from cleaning off the roof. Hopefully the warmer temps today helps thaw things out.

I went yesterday morning...almost blew off the lift or froze to it. Everyone around me had a season's pass and there weren't many there anyways. They really need to draw the families in who bring the kids out a few times a year. No mom in their right mind would bring lil guys out yesterday. It's just been too cold.

However, it did take my mind off my last couple eggs I wanted to hatch!
