NY chicken lover!!!!

The rabbits have been pretty brazen this year - probably because of the weather! Haven't seen any squirrels over here yet, but the weather is nice enough for the cats to prowl the yard, so the only thing I have to worry about is rats (the cats won't kill them for some reason) I'm putting in some brooding and grow out pens in the garage, but am concerned the grain will be irresistible to them. They are endemic to the area and I don't want to attract more....
traps are you best bet. You know you've got them with a trap. Poisons are to dangerous with other animals about.

We got our first eggs today from our EE... Poor gals those were some good sized eggs!!! So thrilled I had to share!
Excellent!

Some of us are so used to xtra large sized eggs we don't recognize a large egg when we see one. I weigh my eggs and most are heavier than the 2oz large.

Does anyone raise Muscovies and have hatching eggs available? A friend of mine here lost her drake recently and has a lonely hen left with some Pekins. She wants more Muscovies but is having a hard time finding some down here. I know there were some in NY who raised them but can't remember who.

I have a very nice young gray and white muscovy drake for sale and a few young hens as well. Message me.

I put my feed in large plastic tubs ( 5 gallon ? ) Most Walmarts will sell them or give them away free .
Go to the bakery ..they get frosting in them ..ask if they have any ..the tops seal so good sometimes I have to use a butter knife to pry them off .

I have too many other animals to even think about poison!!! Way too dangerous! I've been setting a rat trap, and did have them all cleared out. A new one moved in recently. They have been problematic for the past 3 decades here, and plague all the houses in the area. Before I moved in to keep an eye on my mother, and cleared the last batch out, she had ignored them and they chewed a hole through her refrigerator! I have been patching holes as I renovate her house, but this one in the garage is elusive, and knows what a trap is. I'm going to have to try a havahart on him next, since he may not have any experience with one. He is also below my power junction box in the wall, and has likely done some line chewing (lost power to half the garage), so I'm going to have to rip the Sheetrock off in that area to get at the nest and assess the damage. There are 7 cats here. Why none of them bother with the rats is one of the great mysteries of this age... I have never had problems with rats anywhere else, but according to other folks on the road, they have pretty much colonized the area. It's been a constant battle - I clean out the population and more arrive from the places that are less dedicated to removing them....

What a pretty girl! I miss having spring lambs and kids, I'm glad to see the season is going well for you! And the bakery tub idea is a good idea! I may still have some at my house! (I was married to a baker for 12 years) eventually I will build a sheet metal lined grain bin. In the meantime, all the grain is living in the dining room! Eventually I will get my act together!
