NY chicken lover!!!!

Does anyone raise Muscovies and have hatching eggs available? A friend of mine here lost her drake recently and has a lonely hen left with some Pekins. She wants more Muscovies but is having a hard time finding some down here. I know there were some in NY who raised them but can't remember who.

I don't understand my incu. I moved it to the basement increasing the temp control. It read 99.3. So I moved it up another notch and now it's lower.

I have a genesis 1588. It is cooler in the basement, but I have no choice. I've eggses that need to go in.

Call Joel if you like. His father has a lot all color. He's near me. I can give you his number. Just talked with him today.

Says his father doesn't even bother penning them up. They're truly free ranged.

I will have eggs in the late spring/early summer. My gals are still a little young to lay (about 6 months old) at the moment, so I don't expect anything from them before June. They will be covered by a French white drake. Big fellow, very friendly - our girls are standard black and white.

Guess what I found in my yard today.

I heard Delores and the gang outside the window. (They hang near the house). I go out and there in the yard is a beautiful Boxer. It was just looking at the chickens. It belongs to the neighbors who up until last year had stockade fencing.

I chased it away and I suppose it could have killed the chickens if it had a mind too. I'm not taking any chances. I will let them know.

Thank goodness everyone was alright! We didn't have any dogs, just an opossum eating the birds' dinner. Usually a rabbit comes by for the leftovers, so I did a double take when I noticed the tail. He was gone before I got out there, and my entire flock of ducks and geese were just casually sitting in the yard looking at me like I was nuts. Even the pheasants didn't alert. So I'll be up for the next few nights waiting for him... The quail can thank me for it later...

My problem of late with feed is squirrels. They upset the girls and they won't lay.

I've seen rabbits and they don't alarm the girls. I've killed a young weasel and I know there are possums, but haven't seen any.

The rabbits have been pretty brazen this year - probably because of the weather! Haven't seen any squirrels over here yet, but the weather is nice enough for the cats to prowl the yard, so the only thing I have to worry about is rats (the cats won't kill them for some reason) I'm putting in some brooding and grow out pens in the garage, but am concerned the grain will be irresistible to them. They are endemic to the area and I don't want to attract more....

We had rats here from the old farm. I used hardware cloth on everything. Plus two tubs of rat poison. Good luck...they are very difficult to get rid of and can squeeze through some seriously tiny holes or chew. Good luck!!!
