I love to collect chicken books.
Do you want this one it is a cardboard bookI love to collect chicken books.
I gave mine a big cabbage hung up on a rope, first time I keep hearing people doing it, four days latter they still avoid it and I peeled some leaves down, threw them some pieces which they gobbled down, and they still are scared of it Lol! I'm growing kale and swiss chard to freeze and feed mine this next winter. I feed mine dandelion greens in the summer if they are in their run and not free ranging, they love them and super good for them and us, I eat them also, raw chopped fine in salads.I tried cabbage and lettuce and hung it from a string and most of them were scared to death of it...LOL.
I am planning on planting for them this year. Some real nice grasses and squash; maybe about an acre or two.
I didn't realize that was a boxer, you don't see to many white ones. I had a monster of a boxer, reddish fawn with the white mask and black mascara eyes Lol!. he was close to a hundred pounds and no fat, was my best friend for many years, pre wife and kids days. They are so human IMO. He went everywhere with me, even work. I had a guy ask me to breed him to his female, she was white, threw all white pups. Mine would chase animals, but never catch them, he had the worst nose "where did he go"Well I don't know about that boxers personality but, owning boxers of my own (hence my avatar pic) that boy Rowdy lives up to his name. He likes to chase them. His brother Pedey likes to play with them but, he scared a couple of mine to death literally. And my female Lucy attacks them. It's in the boxers nature to hunt them. So it seems to me like chasing him away was a very good choice.
Quote: I have a some small suet cages ...I put stuff in ...Cabbage , Bananas , apples .
They normally dont let me get the stuff in before they start pecking at it ...
Try hanging the cabbage on the side of the pen where it is more stable..
not in the middle of the coop
or
You have to make it appetizing for them to try it ..
Cut the cabbage in half take some of the middle out ...put some scratch or sunflower seeds or feed in it ..put it on the floor
You can do this with a raw pumpkin too ...they love the seeds if you put more stuff in they will eat the whole pumpkin
I have a pointer pit mix too!!!I have 2 dogs. A pointer pit mix and a min pin. Neigh ter go after my chicken/ chicks or pet rats that my kids had. The min pin kill mice and rats that he sometimes finds outside, so does the cat but they know the chickens belong and accept them as part of the family. My cat doesn't even bother chicks in an open brooder. He likes to sleep close to it because of the heat lamp. Even when they get old enough to jump out no one bothers them. The dogs just like to follow them and eat their poop. The cat still kill the song birds so I don't put up any bird feeders. I'm lucky my pets and I have an understanding.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I tried watering the food last night and it sure did keep it in their bowls. I think most of them ate and I had to change a little bit in their feeders. I will buy some suet cages today. I have to hit TSC anyways for my weekly feed run.
I don't trust any dogs around my chickens. Although, I LOVED my family oriented boxer she was still a dog. MY **** **** tzu's got one of my bielfielder roo chicks the other day when their screen fell off. I am learning. Every day a new lesson in chicken raising.
