NY chicken lover!!!!

Our hatch didn't go as well as I would've liked last weekend. 12 chicks hatched 2 of those died the second day. Some of the pipped ones died before making it out and some just didn't hatch at all. We had fertility 30 of 50 made it to lock down. I collected the eggs when it was still way below zero for this hatch and I think that was the problem. We're setting another hatch this weekend. The first hatch 2 NN,1 BLRW, 3 brahma bantam, and 4 OE/EE. Going to set Del/cornish, lav orp, OE/NN, BLRW, and golden cuckoo maran. Hopefully will have better results now that it has been warmer.

Travis has killed 2 opossum the past couple weeks in our barn. Rats we have a problem with every fall when it gets cold. Now we have barn cats and that helps.

The stomach flu has gone through our house the past 2 weeks and hasn't been fun. It bothers me to see my babies look and feel like they did. The aches and pains hung on for days. I'm glad vacation is this week starting.

Rancher--I've been thinking of you and your wife. I wish she didn't have to be going through this.

Sorry to hear about ur hatch. Fingers crossed next batch will go well.

I've got a bunch in the hatcher which I had though gotten too cold, but there's 4 pips now. Of course the suspense is killing me.

Possums r a pain. I found one in my chx house twice in one week. (I had been wondering about the shortage of eggs in there) The second time I found him in there, we did a little relocating. He was very easy to catch bc he just played possum:).

Welcome !
Moving to a cabin ..sounds like you will be in the woods ?
Do lots of research as how to build a safe coop ...there are lots of Predators out there ..that like chicken

I was and am saying Welcome to Aalissa.

But the predator note? There was a nice article in a magazine on "Homesteading" at the bookstore this afternoon on dealing with predators of various sorts. There are of course various opinions so take them ALL to heart.

I wish you well and hope to meet you at the Chickenstock.

THERE were FOUR C. Rock eggs today and the incubator is running.

I do have C. Rock eggs in it but will want to increase my blood line by having more hens laying and hatching.

I've three roosters. If I could split them into two flocks that would be good. One rooster is from Georgia. The other two from a hatchery given to me by Nutty. Two hens are from her too. The others from Georgia.

Anyone willing to help me out by hatching some of them? I'd like to increase this flock. C.Rocks aren't that common I believe. At least not good ones. These guys are big so would make a good dual purpose flock.

I'd help, but my incubator is filled with duck eggs right now. I do have a broody, but she is a first timer and I don't trust her with good eggs. If one of my other girls goes broody I'll let you know. I would be happy to let them hatch some out...I have eggs lined up till chickenstock to put in my incubator, but after that I could help too...I knew I should have gotten the bigger incubator.

I am in love with the Favorelles but everything I'm reading says they aren't hearty breed until adulthood, and definitely not for a newbie, such as myself.
So I am thinking Dominique, Dorking, Delaware. I want a large breed and eventually a dual meat/egg chicken.
I am not completely without some chicken knowledge however it has been years. My parents moved from the country and the farm when I was a teenager and of course most of my jobs then weren't about the care of the chickens only the feeding and the cleaning up after them. And of course the fending off of the somewhat ornery Roos. Sometimes, I had more to do with the chicks and pulleys but not often enough to be of any use. Back then the flock was completely white however both my parents are dead as are my grandparents so I won't be able to find out what those chicks were... I remember them as being beautiful and I did have one as a pet. Her name was "Chicklet" she came to me by default as she wasn't expected to live... she did and became a prolific egger.
If you have any suggestions about chickens I might like I would be grateful. I am looking for a large meat/egger with the ability to forge, predator awareness and friendly.

If you're looking for a docile breed that's heavy and dual purpose and is similar to faverolles but more hearty. I would suggest brahmas. They are definitely one of my favorite breeds, they come in gorgeous colors, and if you liked the feather leg trait of the faverolles, brahmas have feathered legs too.

I have marans, cochins, jersey giants, and coronation sussex. They all fit that description. None of them are hatchery, so they are nice big birds.

The plan is to go south at the end of April so my DD will be left with a bunch of young birds. Any chicks from this hatch will be less than two weeks old.

I've got eight weekers and some just over a week. Iv'e still got to decided where they'll be kept while I'm gone.

I needed to hatch to replace some. Though I'm not sure why as the girls are laying very well.

I have to replace a Delaware and Birchen marans rooster. Someone bought a Marans rooster and hens but I've not heard from them since. Otherwise I might be able to score on with them. I should not have been so quick to sell them.

I've read that smaller flocks do better than larger ones. Better to have more coops with smaller flocks than one big one with lots of birds.

Yes Brahmas were another one I was thinking of. Love the feathered feet.
I think at an earlier point I was being/thinking a little too ambitiously I was looking at the threatened and rarer breeds... kinda crazy and stupid. It will be probably full year before I am able to get my chicks anyway... So many other things to do first. Additionally I would like to get the chicks from a breeder rather than a hatchery. I have heard both good and bad things about both. I want to find someone near me to buy from.

Pyxis how did your hoop House work out this winter with such awful temperatures and all the snow. Did your chickens fair well? was it warm enough for everyone? How is the cleaning of the coop did the tarps work out okay? I am sorry I have so many questions... I feel like I have so very much to learn.
