I live south of Buffalo, come up to Spring ville to shop. I have ducks and a pond and could take the little duck.

If you do, be careful to keep it to yourself and don't tell people where you got it. Technically it is illegal to own her since she came out of the wild. I'm not sure why a rescue place would tell them to take it to the SPCA, but better it has a home than it starves to death since apparently the rescue won't take it. Also make sure to keep her wings clipped when she gets older or she could fly off and die.

You could water test the goose eggs to see if there is any movement?

I lost them all. Whole incubator full of sebastapol, pilgrim, and toulouse. One of the sebbies was internally pipped at the time of demise. I did eggtopsies today because they were so late. Everyone else is doing well in the other two incubators. This is my pet peeve about the Brinsea. The display is not bright, so there is nothing obvious when it shuts down. My other two incubators have big glowing red displays. You can't miss it if they are off. I had turned the circulation fan off on the hatcher for cleaning and maintenance, so I did not notice when the power strip went down by the lack of fan hum..

On the plus side, I have an incubator open again, and I have eggs pipping in my hatcher, so life goes on. I pirated the goose hatched toulouse to imprint, and they are socializing quickly. There is much to be said for my home made incubators. They are beasts, hold heat well, and hatch pretty much everything I throw into them!

The end of the goose egg season is rapidly approaching, and Sebbies should be pretty much done laying by now. I still have next season...

I'm so glad they did well!!!! I can't wait to see how they grow out! Totally excited about the Holderread order too - Mama Saxony's babies are stunning, and I'm hoping that some nice genetics from Holderread bred to them will make for some winning show birds! I have a lead on someone who has sebbies to sell as well. I prefer to hatch and imprint my own because I know they will be easy to handle as adults, but I may grab some in the interim to start my flock! I'm also looking forward to buying chicken eggs from you this season! I will rebuild!!!

@LadyHawkeAvry specializes in waterfowl, but may be preoccupied right now. A few others also have ducklings or broody momma ducks, so maybe he/she can join someone's flock. Being a Mallard, he/she will likely fly away when older.

They are flyers for sure. It will be hard to keep them at home at adulthood if allowed to free range. Little ducks like that can still fly quite well even with their secondary feathers clipped, so they would need to be penned or a house duck in order to be a permanent resident wherever they go.

@mdmcare I'm too far away, (about 5 hours) otherwise I would be happy to raise it to adulthood - it is still at the age where it could be quite well socialized. It would be awesome if it stayed around, because they are adorable! I have a DEC permit for game birds in place already, so it would be easy for me to add a wild waterfowl species. If you have any questions on care, PM me - waterfowl have slightly different feeding requirements than chickens, and are definitely messy, but there are tricks to keeping the water related chaos in the brooder to a minimum!

Can't wait till the picnic to see if I can find any cool eggs to give to them! Until then I'll give them a few eggs of mine.

I have been thinking that I needed to make a few more of my little broody coops...guess I need to get cracking on it cause the nest boxes are all filled up!..There must be something in the water here cause I have one of my magpies broody too.


The Delaware rooster that I got from Rancher has started crowing..sounds like a kazoo...I have decided to name him "Rancher"

I'm starting to get broodies all over the place here too! My black australorp was broody for a few days and quit, but now I have two dedicated BOs at it, and since my flock has seven BOs, one BO/brahma cross, and her half sister, a brahma/production red cross, I'm sure I'm going to end up with more. Just netted myself some nice bantam eggs for my new broody. I also took my broody goose's last egg today, an infertile one, to get her to stop brooding since she wouldn't accept the goslings I tried to give her and she won't be able to hatch any more eggs. Hopefully she quits soon with no eggs, it's not good for her to sit without hatching.

There are many Youtube videos on how to make a Weasel trap. A baited rat trap is used. I caught this one in my garage this past winter. I baited it with a piece of KFC chicken. I'm sure you can figure out how to set up a trap.

I have two trap boxes set in tandem with two different types of rat trap. I used pork chop for my bait - one trap was sprung overnight but without a kill. I haven't lost any birds either though. The teen chickens are in at night, along with the goslings, so the only ones outside are heavy ducks and geese - there isn't a bird under about 7 or 8 pounds out there at night - too big for a weasel. I figure if my huge male ferret won't take them on, a little weasel won't either.

I suggest you use 1/4" hardware cloth. Weasels make me nervous.

My grow out pens are the 1/4' stuff and inside, since I put the babies into them when they are just beginning to feather out. There are occasional rats, so I designed the pen to keep rats out, since an adult rat could make quick work of a young chicken. The back of the pen is up against a sheetrock wall, and even that is reinforced with sheets of perforated stamped aluminum. My quail laying cages are the same, as I leave them on the ground and move them daily to let the quail pick at the grass. I left them in the aviary this year because I liked that they had so much room to run and fly... My usual problem outside are skunks. After trial and error, I had gotten the aviary totally skunk proof. They gave up on even trying and would just eat the layer pellets out of the bowl on the back porch. (up until the birds alerted and I went out and shot them) My wire around the aviary, at 1" in diameter, was WAY too big for weaselproofing though, even with the 1/2" aviary netting on the inside to keep the little ones from slipping through. I'm going to replace the lower sections of the aviary before I turn young pheasants out, and will probably relocate it to a more defensible area with only 2 open sides..

I have gotten nothing but compliments on your easter eggers by the way! I have set aside the nicest of the batch to keep for egg production - those cornish rock over EE ladies are HUGE, and imprint really well!
