NY chicken lover!!!!

Fogot, for what it's worth. Happy Fathers day. Not too many fathers on here.

I keep forgetting to ask. Anyone know why I've stopped getting thread updates
I havent got any updates since I changed it to stop following some threads ..it stopped all updates .
I just leave my browsers tabs open to the threads I watch ...so I just click back & forth ..
Firefox remembers these tabs if you close these all at once or you can set it to

Oh yes I did know about ovations, they actually started in 2012 - you can see the first post was posted in August of 2012. I thought you meant there had been an update to the existing ovations system and I was reading the thread over and over to find it and couldn't, lol.

Broody question:
Only once before have I had a broody raise chicks all the way thru. She did a great job, but the chicks matured into standoffish, almost wild adults. Does this just come w the broody territory? Or are there ways to calm the chicks & imprint on them a bit while their mom is raising them? It's so nice to have momma chicken doing all the work, but I'm concerned I'm gona have some wild ones when she's done. Am I asking to have my cake & eat it too? Suggestions?
Probably
Broody Babies are more apt to imprint on mama not you ..
Some of it is personality .
2 - I personally hatched ...1 is more stand offfish and 1 comes up to me & pecks my leg to be picked up ( the one that took a shower with me & I was its only compainion for 2 days .)
Ive got 2 sets of 9 ...most seem like the wild bunch to me ...
Things you can do
Try feeding them out of your hand ...their regular food or treats
At night I try to talk to them & pet them when they are roosting ...The baby Roos object & peck back ..the pullets are more docile .
Try to think like a chicken ...they are food oriented ...try to appeal to their nature

Morning all. Candled eggs last night and I should have 4 more hatching soon in Legolas coop. Galadriel has been sitting on them but now I see Eowyin and Arwin are in the box as well. 23 broodys in one box and Eowyn already has 3 chicks! Fortunately for them, all 4 hens in there share in parenting so its all good.

Came home yesterday after work to finding out that Little Big Man, my blue silkie roo, managed to get into the pan of motor oil dh had in the garage. What a mess. 3 baths and half a bottle of dawn later, he is clean again. Thank goodness it was quite warm yesterday so I stuck him in a puppy pen in the sun to dry off. My biggest concern was that he would ingest it trying to groom himself. I dont think he did as he seems quite well and is back to himself. After a horrible day at work, that was the last thing I needed but it ended well.

Dont know if chickens are supposed to eat lobster but mine certainly enjoyed the carcass last night! The shell was so clean you could eat off it! A friend of dh brought him back some (4 pounders!) so we ate one last night/ Barely. Thing was huge! Anyways, the terrorists were very enthusiastic about eating it. Even the Duke was eating it with the girls. Normally he stands back and lets the girls eat first before he eats. Like I said, nothing but clean shell left.

Contemplating going to chickenstock in sept. It will depend on what happens with the pharmacy buyout that is currently happening. We were blindsided by this news last tuesday. I found out on facebook, when someone posted a link to a newspaper. Needless to say, we were all in shock and there have been no real answers to the many questions everyone has. Polished up my resume just in case. I think its a good idea for nutty to charge for drinks and hotdogs and burgers. I know she did all the cooking and a lot of nonbyc people came, which is good for exposure but expensive to feed. The collective we on here who are going probably need to be more decisive earlier so that plans can be made. Myself included. Once I know if I have a job and what scheduling will look like, I can then be firm.

Had 5 blackberries off my plant this am. Yummy! My tomato plants have shot up again as did my cucumber. Have to call the farm where I pick to see if their blackberries are ready since I am getting some on mine.

Finishing the baby hat today and starting the booties. That will make 2 sets done. Then its the cat in the hat stuff my other pregnant friend wants. Busy, busy. Have a good day all!

I personally liked many more people there - more chance of us all swapping and selling things ... but it could have contributed to the food issue. Here is my solution suggestion:

Maybe a wrist band (or any type of marker) for anyone who brings stuff to share - like a normal pot luck - and anyone without a wrist band will pay an amount to get a wrist band ? Due to my distance, I was limited in what I could bring (no frig stuff) and perhaps some don't like to cook. I was certainly looking for some AMISH FOOD !!!! :)) didn't notice for sure if there were any - so I probably missed out.

But again - I can't make the September date - so I'll be catching you all next spring.

Of these 200 people there where 50 or less from BYC ( includes the children ) - all of those donated something as far as I know .I brought $20.00 of Hofman hots myself
The others....nON byc I didnt see that they brought anything . (You would know this better than me )
I think if you are going to invite the public you should charge because most probably didnt bring anything..Right ?
You could just make this one a closed group or charge a cover charge per person
Figure maybe $5.00 each ..If you say Free Food People will Come & THEY DID !

Good point Gramma. People like 'free', so perhaps there should be a small 'plate charge'. Doesn't have to be a lot, but enough to cover cost.
