NY chicken lover!!!!

Know that Soft feathered birds make the best Frizzles. Cochin have soft feathers.

I googled "hard feather breeds" but the pictures included some soft feathered breeds too.

OE and I think Leghorns would make bad crosses.

Orpingtons and Cochin and perhaps Brahmas would be good. Silkies do too.

My Buckwheat is a cross between Frenchy and a Cuckoo Maran. I also have Buckwheats daughter who is a cross with a Delaware. Not a great cross really but she's okay.

Buckwheat. She's gotten swollen again but seem fine otherwise.

I have one frizzled barred rock hen and hatched 2 more chicks from the older girls that I got from you. One has smooth feathers, but one is frizzled! Can't wait till it gets big kid feathers.

Are any of you that do hatches by any chance in Broome Co?

I'm in Southern Cortland County, so close to Broome.

Tao Chick- you may want to let the incubator set and stabilize for at least 24hrs before adding eggs. Not sure which type of incubator you are using, some need more fiddling with than others. The eggs will be ok on a counter during that time, just tip one end of the carton up, then switch ends couple times a day so they are 'rotated'.

Lapeerian what breeds do you have? I'm looking for hopefully a Roo for the girls so come spring we can start a second round of craziness. This chicken mess will be the death of me. Its gone from having a few birds to keep us with eggs to a full blown "I want more" psychosis or obsession.

Are silkies good layers or meat birds or are they just cute as can be?

Look up black meat chickens...

Are any of you that do hatches by any chance in Broome Co?

We are in Binghamton/Vestal area every couple months

Then I guess I'm not investing money in them. I want real chickens, ones that lay lots of eggs and cook up nicely.

If that's what your after, RIR, new Hampshire and Delaware

I'm feeling a little nervous.  I just made the plans for incubating eggs.  I pick up the incubator tomorrow and will get it all set up.  I pick up eggs on Friday (from several sources- Welsummers, Partridge Rocks, Brahmas, Ameraucanas, Black Copper Marans, and some barnyards to fill the bator).  I will set them all Friday night (up to 40).  This is a learning experience for me and for my children.  After bothering to go through all this trouble and spending money on hatching eggs, I'm very worried that it will be a poor hatch.  Any advice is welcome.  My sister in law probably needs a break from my incessant questions.  Do you have any way you keep track of the hatch?  I'm going to have my oldest son journal about it, and I found some online resources for the learning aspect.  I don't expect 100%, but I am worried about a complete failure.  ((Don't ask me how I survived becoming a mom 3 times- it probably was equally nerve-wracking))

I think part of my anxiety is coming from the fact that my nearly 11-year-old boxer is not doing well.  He probably won't survive the weekend.  :-(

You are braver than I at this point. I am so wishy washy about the incubation thing I am afraid to even try.I hope your hatch goes well.

So sorry about your pup, it's really hard when they go after so many years of service and love.

Bakerzdoz ..... for a sweet bird and a little different coloring - I suggest a Speckled Sussex ..... they are big, sweet and have lovely dots over rust/mahogany feathers with some black flecked in too.

Tao chick - so sorry about your Boxer - we know they are a family member.

Girls - sorry - I am going to be picking something up at 7:30 am .... then heading home to unload and that cuts into my work time - so I can't come home and then go out again as I have 2 books I am working on right now ..... One is great - like a new Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe) PLUS I can't count on the weekend to catch up on editing as the HAY is being delivered on Sat morning and we have no helpers this year - so just DJ and I to unload and stack :) Gunna take all day both days to get that done !
Oooooh, Speckled Sussex are GORGEOUS!!!

They kind of remind me of one of my favorite banty chicken the Mille Fluer D'uccle as far as coloring.

Do they do well in confinement? I have an urban setting . I have a pretty large coop and run, so they won't be overcrowded. (I have 13 and can fit 30+ hens) Plus I did put up a 5ft high temporary fence in my yard so they can free range there a few times a week. Next year we are putting up a permanent 6ft high privacy fence. However, they need to be confined for the most part.
Do you know anyone that breeds Speckled Sussex? I really would rather buy from personal flocks rather than a hatchery. I would like a Roo and 3 or so girls.
