Morning all. Was up at 1130 last night because a bear broke into my silkie coop. . I am so angry and upset over the loss of my babies. I know you all can understand that. Sorry, had to vent. Time to go fix up a temp fence outback for these survivors. Later all.

sorry you lost your babies ..they were hard to come by ..

Is there something in the silkie coop that is drawing the bear ?
We have a motion sensor light on our coop ..maybe lights out there would help ?
I can totally see you as a crazy chicken woman ...Been there ...done that ...
I only chase hawks & foxes ...not bears

Pharm...I'm so sorry that the bear got some of your young ones. I can so picture you running out there.

Things her aren't that great right now either. First I had to put down my one Delaware girl that got her head pecked.

... One of my sisters was taken to the ER. She was having trouble breathing and had some severe pain in her shoulder. They admitted her and she has a collapsed lung!.

so Sorry ...shes young ...she will recover..maybe she will quit smoking now

Pharm and Luv, so sorry for your losses. I hope the bear doesn't come back.

My broody orp with the two chicks lost the gorgeous one that I wanted to see grow up She only had one chick left so I decided today to see if she would take some just hatched cemani culls so the chick wasn't all alone once she was done raising it. It seems to have gone well - she didn't peck at any of them and let them all under her. The chick was quite happy to have some new playmates too - it ran right out to greet them when I put them in the crate.

Pyxis ... question for you - that Marans roo you gave me - he is doing fine - looking fine .... but he came to me with blue eyes .... I thought, wow - a Marans with blue eyes? Cool.

Now his eyes are not the brilliant marans orange - but they are certainly a nice orange color !!!! does that happen a lot ?

Do you have hens from this hatch and do any have blue eyes ? I was starting to get excited about non-sop blue eyes ! ha ha

He is living up to his name: Trouble.



DECKGIRLS - aren't good Marans eggs almost like a piece of art !? Congrats.

I'm feeling a bit jealous. When my friend gave me 2 Marans, he raved on about how dark & pretty the eggs were. Well - I'm completely unimpressed by them. My Welsummers lay a darker, speckledy egg that is quite beautiful.

Boskelli - I bet you don't have French Black Copper Marans - they are the darkest of the dark Like glossy chocolate !

I got some cuckoo marans once - thinking all Marans were the same as far as egg color and I was going for varied feather looks - I was also disappointed - the egg were just nice brown eggs. Live and learn.


I am wondering about this white Marans I got from Pyxis ..... he has a great body type and leg feathering so far - I didn't get to see the egg he came out of ......

Metella - are your Marans a bit 'high strung'? I only have 2 hens (1 rooster) and they are both quite aloof....I put it down to being French.
