NY chicken lover!!!!

Pharm and luv, so sorry about your losses, and for others who are struggling during this time. I have had to sell my chickens off one by one to pay for stuff as my DH is out of work for knee surgery. I'm not sure I will even go to chickenstock this fall as I will most likely have no chickens. I will be starting all over again so no worries, but it was emotionally hard especially on the kids. If I'm ready by chickenstock I will go and be on the lookout for very young chicks or hatching eggs. Unless I sell my incubators next.
sorry to hear this. I expect to hatch in spring. Always have chicks to spare. Can you at least keep a base. It's expensive to grow out hens. I wish you well. Is there anything I can do?

Went to the hospital to visit with my sister this afternoon. She is looking a little better and with any luck they will be taking out the chest tube tomorrow. If her lung stays good and doesn't collapse when she coughs then she should be able to come home tomorrow or Monday! She is coughing a lot and it hurts her really bad. When I was there she had one coughing spell that ended in tears for her and me. I hat to see her in pain. It isn't like she is a baby she is in her 30's, but both my younger sisters will always be little in my eyes and I will always look after them....but that is what big sisters do.

Chickens are all doing good. Weaned Jessie and her duckling. The duck is getting bigger then she is. I think that she was pretty happy after about an hour. She went about her business like nothing had changed. It think that she likes not having to worry about the duck. I put it in with my other ducklings and after a while it was just fine.

I am considering going to chickenstock. If I get a good hatch I will bring chicks. Hang in there!

The older ones will probably always be the dominate ones ...but by letting them grow more the babies are not as intimidated...
Sometimes it is the baby food the older ones want ...my hens love baby food .
If this arrangement works for you ....keep it that way until it doesnt work & then merge them ....always with super vision ( you are mama ?- they can go to you for protection )

I just recentlly merged my 2 baby flocks together ( 2 days ago ) coz it was getting too much ..
Easier on me ...timing turned out to be perfect ...one mama was still with them to protect them ..
Now she is back with the main flock ...
they are together in the coop but they free range seperately for now ....they will merge more as they get used to the arrangement

Thanks for the response, glad you like the ark, it turned out very useful for our previous pair of chickens and these 2 - it only cost $85, came as a flat pack from Amazon, which I put together and then tacked chicken wire across the bottom, to make it a little more predator proof. Here's the link in case anyone is interested....

I can cope with keeping them separate, was expecting it, having the extra dogpen run gives them a good chance for a leg stretch, we had also been advised then when we do merge them, if we can fit the little ark or a dog crate in there, it's a good idea to have it in a corner, or somewhere you can prop the door open wide enough for the smaller ones to have an escape place, that the big ones can't fit into.

Pearl was pecking them through the fence again tonight, but the little ones seem immune to the evil stares, and just step out of reach.

Same here, considering it, I'd rather go to your all's 'chickenstock' before I would go to one of our 'company picnics'.
Hopefully I'll have red Sussex, white jersey giants, and langshans for sale soon, I would never ask much for them, eggs or chicks, would make me happy just to get others interested in having them.

Thanks to all for your offers. I'm sure we will get through this rough patch and if I can make it to chickenstock I look forward to getting chicks from all my friends here on BYC. luv glad your sister is doing better. I will keep her in my thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear that you are in a bit of a rough patch. Hang in there it will get better! And you don't have to have chickens to be part of the group.

Ugh sounds rough. Hope u will still come regardless of ur chicken owning status. You know u can always count on us to support u w eggs & chicks when ur ready for them. :D Here's hoping the rough patch passes quick & things swing in a much more positive direction. :hugs

I too like my kitchen spotless before any projects. Doesn't matter that I'm using one space, all counters, tables and sinks are clean before I start so I don't have to stop to find a clean spot to set something.

As for the play pen, we have a baby monitor in the barn so after little girl is in bed or napping, we can work outside. My mom doesn't like that we leave her in the house alone, but it isn't like we are leaving the property. Stuff has to be done and cannot do it while strapped to the house.
I have a 15 year old who is disabled so baby monitor is a life saver for us. She naps 2-3 times a day so with all her down time I would never get to work outside.
