NY chicken lover!!!!

Luv, Happy to see you got to see your sister, there is nothing like family.
and sorry to have read about your hen that you were caring for. I know you did the best you could and sometimes its not meant to be. I am sure she felt loved and comforted with all the extra care.

Cuti ~ I hope things pick up for you very soon and your DH finds work very soon. Hang in there.

I am looking for an apron and I believe I am going to ChickenStock. I would like the one wit the Red Roosters on it. Please PM me with the cost and any other details. As Chickenstock gets closer I will have a better idea of whether I will be attending ChickeStock, it depends on my husbands schedule, more or less.

I will also be looking for some chicks.. I haven't decided the breed yet. Still researching.

Are you talking to me? PM me if you are.

Rancher..dw does very nice work and I'm sure it's cathartic for her. My mother made all our clothes growing up to save money and because I was hard to fit. Back then material was cheaper than store bought clothes. Nobody ever knew. I did the same when my girls were little. It's a lost art. I did teach my girl scouts how to handset and while some hated it, years later they thanked me because they were able to sew on a button or sew up a hole when they were out and about. I crochet instead of sew now and will be teaching my mother when I go down in august. My mother can still out sew the best of them.

Found a place to get free pallets so I'm going to get some to make bear boards to put around my silkie coops.

Off to the pharm. Stay cool everyone.

She just does this for the kids. My GD love dresses. She used to sew for us when we first got married. Funny story about that. I like Lions so she made me a shirt with lion fabric.

We went to the NYS fair, me wearing the shirt that she had made for me. While there we ran into another guy wearing the exact same shirt, exact same patterned fabric. We laugh about it still. His was made by his mother.

I hate mosquitoes. They love me. I want a restraining order against them. They were on me like hyenas on a fresh kill this am. Rancher is right. It would take an Armageddon of frogs to eat them all.

I didn't collect eggs last night because they're so bad. I'll do two days at a time. I've one nest box the Del don't use so I put them all in there real quick.

So. I went to Joanns to buy some more fabric even though DW leaves in the morning for TX.

I have no idea how we'll afford this trip but she hasn't seen the GK's and after all she's been through I can't say no.

She won't make these up until she comes back of course. I thought to get some more man friendly fabric. I had her make some man friendly aprons for me at school since I was the only guy. I thought perhaps the guys were staying away because of all the girlie aprons. Of course I prayed too and then Bro. Roy lost his job and he started to come in four days a week. He didn't "need" to work and found one later that allowed him to come into school anyhow, thank the Lord. We men do the dishes so it's quite hard.

DW made one of the aprons but did it upside down. All the chickens look like they're standing on their heads.

I'll keep that one for school.

I'm taking a break from staining and polying two garden benches that got cruddy over the years. Not the greatest job but much better than before.

Boskelli - I bet you don't have French Black Copper Marans - they are the darkest of the dark :) Like glossy chocolate !

I got some cuckoo marans once - thinking all Marans were the same as far as egg color and I was going for varied feather looks - I was also disappointed - the egg were just nice brown eggs. Live and learn.

:) I am wondering about this white Marans I got from Pyxis ..... he has a great body type and leg feathering so far - I didn't get to see the egg he came out of ......

Not all Marans lay a dark egg. If they did we wouldn't have such a hard time keeping the eggs nice & dark. The word French that people put in front of the name really doesn't mean anything significant. Some people just like to say it. The official name of them is "Marans" no french in it. It originally was used to distinquish between the Marans with the feathered legs and the clean legged Marans.

Cuckoos lay the lightest eggs of all. People didn't bother to keep the egg color dark, and over time it got lighter due to indiscriminate breeding. That is what makes Marans tough to breed, you have both the egg color and body type to breed for, and sometimes they don't come together!

What about blue eyed Marans ... his eyes were really crystal blue for months - now the traditional orange - but not the brilliant Marans orange yet.

Are there typically blue eyed Marans ? And if so - is that eye trait linked genetically with other traits?

I've got to get a pic of his awesome feet feathering to share.

I suppose it depends on your priority. Dark eggs are nice but don't taste any different do they? Do we want Marans who lay a lot of large eggs or Marans who lay a few dark eggs.

My CRocks, are very large in size but eggs are lacking in size. Medium at best.

Clearly customers don't mind that those extra large eggs come from hybrids because that's what most sellers at the market have.

EE's lay nicely but many of mine lay a medium egg.

My Dels are good layers but size varies. They are seriously losing favor with me. They're just too small for the standard and good stock is hard to come by. Which I suspect is why they're still endangered or whatever you'd call it.

Then too there is hardiness.

We have breeders and hatchers. If you're like me not working for a particular standard, you're just a hatcher. I can't keep four different breeds and be a breeder. I'd have to hatch hundreds of chicks, grow them out and then process or sell 90% from what I understand.

Hello! I recently joined BYC ...but I have raised chickens for five years now. I did my first hatch this summer and now with nine chicks...I am realizing that six out of the nine are probably roosters. Does anyone have any interest in them or any suggestions where a nearby bachelor pad might be. I have someone who will take them to eat, but I just can't go there yet. They are currently four weeks old and they are all unusual breeds. I have a heritage Dominique, necked neck, barred Cochins, blue favacuana and a barred olive eggers. The eggs were purchased through my pet chicken. It was fun to do but now the hard part comes. I don't mind keeping them until they get older, but when the crowing starts, they gotta go. Someone told me of a place in NJ. A sanctuary of sorts. A friend of mine went there to get a new rooster and had the pick of the lot! Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am close to NYC. Thanks for sharing any ideas!
