NY chicken lover!!!!

Candled duck eggs under broody hens. So far three out of five I think. Two def have life so there is hope. Took two EE chicks from Big Delores today. She's on duck eggs and has about a week to go.

Found a dead chick in the C. Rocks run. Didn't notice it yesterday when the hen was out. This particular hen is sitting on a duck egg too. Nice movement in the egg. She'd broken one egg and the others were no good. Except for this dead chick that I'd not noticed had hatched.

I've been trying to hatch Dels under the broodies but with no luck. I don't understand why they're not viable. Shells seem soft too even though I've given them extra oyster shell. It is a puzzle. I may try the incubator but not till things here turn round.

Good to hear that some of the eggs are developing. The ones that I have in the incubator go in lock down tomorrow. I'll candle them tonight then just to be sure. Right now there are 6 that were good at last check.

The little roo chick that I hatched last is crowing like crazy. They aren't that old. One of the little boys yesterday I caught him trying to mount his little brother? I can't believe that a little rooster that is only 8 weeks today is doing big boy things...crazy.

20! Half of lockdown eggs and nearly half of set eggs have hatched. I'm quite disappointed with the Brahma turnout. I bought 7, 4 made it to lockdown, and I think one of the two that have hatched is cross beak. The BCM are great so far 5/7. Partridge Plymouth Rocks are adorable! As are the Wheaten Ameraucanas. And my single Legbar. And, all of them really.

Getting excited...Duck Eggs are in lock down tomorrow! There are 2 that have internal pips already. I know not to get too excited yet with them cause they always take FOREVER to hatch.

Barn sitting this week for a friend of mine. She has 4 horses, 13 chickens, 1 old pekin duck and a barn cat. I am really looking forward to takeing care of horses again. I really do miss it. I hate to say it, but I would give up all of my birds if I could have a horse... I have taken care of other peoples horses for so many years...One day I will have my own.

The Welsummers arrived! I have 25 hatched chicks. I'm guessing 26 & 27 will finish hatching tonight, and maybe some more of the 9 others. The Brahma I mentioned earlier doesn't look cross beaked now. I've discarded 2 eggs because they pipped at the wrong end and failed to progress. I attempted to assist but they had already expired.
This is not as exhausting as being a mom to 3 human kids, but I'm certainly tired. Thank you for your encouragement!

Did I mention I have a C. Rock hen on one lone Duck egg? I have no idea what the poor thing will do when it hatches. I've got to move her to her own place after losing the first chick she hatched.

STRAY cat showed up. I noticed it today. I think it was here yesterday. There is NO WAY we can afford a cat. NO WAY I will put up with litter and stink. No matter what the commercials say there is no non stinking litter. Besides my back has been hurting and I can't bend over to sift litter. I think it was a dumped cat. I hate people. (Well not you guys you're not people, you're a bunch of chicken weirdos. Like me.

How many of the eggs are left and developing?

Maybe the cat will move on..

So Cute!!! Better than 50% hatch rate overall is excellent on ur first hatch! As you do more hatches (bc very few of us can resist :)) u will know more of what to expect and u will worry less and u will make adjustments with confidence bc uv learned from experience stuff the books and website threads can't tell u. Then of course that excitement when they start busting out never goes away, nor does the appreciation for the new little fluff balls. :D Who says hatching is addictive?
